Mark M. Nakashima (born March 27,1963) is a Democratic member of the Hawaii House of Representatives. He was first elected in 2008,and represents the first district,including Hamakua,North Hilo,and South Hilo. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1988,he taught at Castle High School and Olomana School's Alder Street Detention Home before transferring back to his alma mater,Honokaa High &Intermediate School. From 1993 until his election to the state legislature,he worked for the Hawaii State Teachers Association,the state affiliate of the National Education Association. [1]

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is a public university in Hilo,Hawaiʻi. It is one of ten general campuses of the University of Hawaiʻi System. It was founded as Hilo Center at Lyman Hall of the Hilo Boys School in 1945 and was a branch campus of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. In 1970 it was reorganized by an act of the Hawaiʻi State Legislature and became a campus within the newly created University of Hawaiʻi System.

David Belden Lyman was an early American missionary to Hawaii who opened a boarding school for Hawaiians. His wife Sarah Joiner Lyman (1805–1885) taught at the boarding school and kept an important journal. They had several notable descendants.
Yoshito Takamine was an American politician and labor leader in Hawaii. Takamine,who was first elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 1958,when the state was still the Territory of Hawaii,served in the state House of Representatives for 12 consecutive terms until his retirement in 1984.
