Mark Tuxford Nelson (born May 29, 1954) is an American scientist who researches the regulation of blood flow in the brain. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2019.
Mark Tuxford Nelson was born in 1954 [1] in New York City [2] and grew up in River Edge, New Jersey. His father Arthur Tuxford Nelson was a World War II veteran who worked for Union Carbide as a journalist for their technical literature, and his mother Gloria Anson Nelson was an art teacher at a public school. [1] [3] For his undergraduate degree, he attended Tufts University where he studied mathematics and biology. He then attended Washington University in St. Louis for his PhD under the advisement of Mordecai Blaustein, graduating in 1980. He did post-doctoral research at the University of Maryland and the University of Konstanz in Germany. [2]
He briefly taught at the University of Miami from 1984 to 1986 before accepting a position at the University of Vermont in 1986; he became the chair of their pharmacology department in 1995. [4] [2] Nelson's research is primarily focused on how bloodflow in the brain responds to neuronal activity. He researches the ion channels in endothelial and smooth muscle cells. His research is applicable to small vessel disease responsible for dementia and stroke. [5] [6]
Along with Kenneth Walsh, he succeeded David Julius in 2021 as the co-editor of the peer-reviewed journal the Annual Review of Physiology . [7]
Nelson is a member of several scientific societies, including the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences and Vermont Academy of Sciences and Engineering. In 2019, Nelson was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences. [2]
Gerald Maurice Edelman was an American biologist who shared the 1972 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for work with Rodney Robert Porter on the immune system. Edelman's Nobel Prize-winning research concerned discovery of the structure of antibody molecules. In interviews, he has said that the way the components of the immune system evolve over the life of the individual is analogous to the way the components of the brain evolve in a lifetime. There is a continuity in this way between his work on the immune system, for which he won the Nobel Prize, and his later work in neuroscience and in philosophy of mind.
Eric Richard Kandel is an Austrian-born American medical doctor who specialized in psychiatry, a neuroscientist and a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. He was a recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research on the physiological basis of memory storage in neurons. He shared the prize with Arvid Carlsson and Paul Greengard.

Paul Greengard was an American neuroscientist best known for his work on the molecular and cellular function of neurons. In 2000, Greengard, Arvid Carlsson and Eric Kandel were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning signal transduction in the nervous system. He was Vincent Astor Professor at Rockefeller University, and served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, as well as the Scientific Council of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. He was married to artist Ursula von Rydingsvard.
Phillip Allen Sharp is an American geneticist and molecular biologist who co-discovered RNA splicing. He shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Richard J. Roberts for "the discovery that genes in eukaryotes are not contiguous strings but contain introns, and that the splicing of messenger RNA to delete those introns can occur in different ways, yielding different proteins from the same DNA sequence". He has been selected to receive the 2015 Othmer Gold Medal.
Randy Wayne Schekman is an American cell biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, former editor-in-chief of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and former editor of Annual Review of Cell and Developmental Biology. In 2011, he was announced as the editor of eLife, a new high-profile open-access journal published by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust launching in 2012. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1992. Schekman shared the 2013 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with James Rothman and Thomas C. Südhof for their ground-breaking work on cell membrane vesicle trafficking.
José Nelson Onuchic is a Brazilian and American physicist, the Harry C & Olga K Wiess Professor of Physics at Rice University. He does research in molecular biophysics, condensed matter chemistry, and genetic networks, and is known for the folding funnel hypothesis stating that the native state of a protein is a deep minimum of free energy for the protein's natural conditions among its possible configurations. He was the college master for Lovett College at Rice University from 2014 to 2019.

Charles Moen Rice is an American virologist and Nobel Prize laureate whose main area of research is the Hepatitis C virus.
