Markus Poschner (born 1971) is a German conductor and pianist.

Biography

Born in Munich, Poschner studied at the with Hermann Michael. His mentors and supporters included Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Colin Davis and Jorma Panula.

From 2000 to 2006, Poschner was chief conductor of the Georgisches Kammerorchester Ingolstadt. He has also been first Kapellmeister of the Komische Oper Berlin. From 2007 to 2017, Poschner was Generalmusikdirektor (GMD) of the city of Bremen, which encompassed chief conductorships of the Bremer Philharmoniker and of the Theater Bremen. [1]

Poschner became chief conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana with the 2015-2016 season. He became chief conductor of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz as of the 2017-2018 season. [2] He is scheduled to conclude his tenure in Linz in 2027. [3] In February 2023, the Sinfonieorchester Basel announced the appointment of Poschner as its next chief conductor, effective with the 2025–2026 season. [4]

In 2024, Poschner conducted Zemlinsky's Der Traumgörge at the Oper Frankfurt, directed by Tilmann Köhler, with AJ Glueckert in the title role, Zuzana Marková as Gertraud, Magdalena Hinterdobler as Grete and Liviu Holender as Hans. He claimed that this was the first unabridged production of the complete music on stage of the 1907 opera that was first performed in 1980. [5] [6]

Outside of Europe, Poschner has served as principal guest conductor of the Orquesta Sinfonica de Chile. Poschner is also known as a jazz pianist. [1] In December 2022, Poschner first guest-conducted the Utah Symphony. [7] He returned for a subsequent guest-conducting appearance in November 2023. [8] In November 2024, the Utah Symphony announced the appointment of Poschner as its next music director, effective with the 2027-2028 season. Poschner took the title of music director-designate with immediate effect. [9] [10]

Poschner and his wife Elvira have three children. [9] Since 2010, he is an honorary professor at the University of Bremen, where he teaches courses in musicology and music education.

The Frankfurt Radio Symphony is the radio orchestra of Hessischer Rundfunk, the public broadcasting network of the German state of Hesse. Venues are Alte Oper and hr-Sendesaal. Music director is the French conductor Alain Altinoglu. Chief conductors have brought in Russian, Nordic and French influences. The orchestra has been one of the leading Mahler and Bruckner orchestras internationally. The hr-Sinfonieorchester with 108 musicians is the third oldest in the ARD.

<i>Der Traumgörge</i> Opera by Alexander Zemlinsky

Der Traumgörge, Op. 11, is an opera in two acts and an epilogue by Austrian composer Alexander Zemlinsky. The libretto was written by Leo Feld based on the fairy tale "Vom unsichtbaren Königreiche" by Richard von Volkmann and the poem "Der arme Peter" by Heinrich Heine. After the prepared premiere at the Vienna State Opera in 1907 did not happen, the work was finally first performed by the Staatstheater Nürnberg in 1980.

The WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne is a German radio orchestra based in Cologne, where the orchestra mainly performs at two concert halls: the WDR Funkhaus Wallrafplatz and the Kölner Philharmonie.

The Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra is a German symphony orchestra based in Berlin. In Berlin, the orchestra gives concerts at the Konzerthaus Berlin and at the Berliner Philharmonie. Consisting of 110 musicians, the orchestra participates in the Bruckner Festival, the Ars Electronica Festival and the Linzer Klangwolke.

The MDR-Sinfonieorchester is a German radio orchestra based in Leipzig. It is the radio orchestra of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, the public broadcaster for the German states of Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. It is one of the oldest Radio orchestras in the world and the oldest in Germany. It was founded in Leipzig, Germany in 1923, with 115 musicians. Apart from a short interruption during World War II, it has been the main orchestra of the Central German Broadcasting Company (MDR) since 1924. The orchestra performs concerts in Leipzig at the Gewandhaus.

John Neal Axelrod is a Swiss/American conductor. In 2024, Axelrod was named Music Director and Principal Conductor of the newly created Swiss National Orchestra. Axelrod was elected Principal Conductor of the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra in a unique open ended contract in 2022. From 2019 to 2023 He was Principal Guest Conductor of the City of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. AJ Glueckert is an American operatic tenor, based in Germany at the Oper Frankfurt. He has performed leading roles there, and also at major opera houses internationally, such as Wagner's Erik at the Metropolitan Opera and Puccini's Pinkerton at the Santa Fe Opera.

Liviu Holender is an Austrian operatic baritone, based at the Oper Frankfurt, where he has performed leading roles including the Count in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Henrik in Carl Nielsen's Maskarade and Hans in Zemlinsky's Der Traumgörge. He has appeared internationally. In recital, concert and recording he has focused on Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn and music by other composers of the early 20th century.

Magdalena Hinterdobler is a German operatic soprano, based at the Oper Frankfurt, where she has performed leading roles including Eva in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Elisabetta in Verdi's Don Carlo and Grete in Zemlinsky's Der Traumgörge. She appeared as Anna in the world premiere of Gerd Kühr's Paradiese at the Leipzig Opera in 2021, and as Chrysothemis in Elektra by Richard Strauss at the Tyrolean State Theatre in 2023.
