Martin James Bartlett (born 1996) is an English classical pianist who has twice reached the keyboard finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year contest, [1] [2] winning the competition in 2014. [3]
From the year 2010, [4] Bartlett was educated at The Purcell School for Young Musicians, [4] a boarding and day specialist independent school in the town of Bushey in Hertfordshire.
Bartlett was born on 20 July 1996. He began his musical studies at the age of six, first with the piano and then two years later with bassoon and recorder. [1] He appeared on the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2012, at the age of 15, as a finalist in the keyboard category. [1] At that time, he was studying for the GCE Advanced Level in music and physics. In 2014, he was again selected as a finalist in that category. [2]
In October 2014 Bartlett was one of the musicians to record the "God Only Knows" charity single for BBC Children in Need, in collaboration with Nicola Benedetti, Stevie Wonder, Sam Smith, One Direction, Elton John, Emile Sandé, and others. The recording was broadcast on all BBC TV channels, received over 11 million hits on YouTube and also launched BBC Music. [5]
In 2015 Bartlett was one of the youngest-ever soloists to debut at the BBC Proms, performing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue , with reviews in The Daily Telegraph [6] and The Times praising his musical insight and maturity. [7]
More recently Bartlett attended the 'Progress 1000' party hosted by the London Evening Standard celebrating London's most influential people. He was nominated as one of London's most influential musicians. [8]
In 2018 Bartlett won the second prize and the audience prize of the piano competition Kissinger Klavierolymp (Kissingen Piano Olympics) in Germany. [9]
Bartlett signed a recording contract with Warner Classics in 2019. The release of his debut album "Love and Death" with works of Prokofiev, Bach, Liszt, Schumann, Wagner and Granados was announced for May 2019. [10]
On Wednesday the 6th of March 2019, Martin James Bartlett was awarded the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Rosebowl by Prince Charles. [11]

The Leeds International Piano Competition, informally known as The Leeds and formerly the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, takes place every three years in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was founded in 1961 by Marion, Countess of Harewood, Dame Fanny Waterman, and Roslyn Lyons, with the first competition being held in 1963. Waterman was the chair and artistic director up to the 2015 competition when Paul Lewis and Adam Gatehouse became Co-Artistic Directors. The first round of the competition takes place internationally and in 2021 went 'virtual' when 63 pianists were recorded in 17 international locations and the Jury deliberated online, in order to circumvent the various impacts of Covid. The 2nd round, semi-finals and finals take place in the Great Hall of the University of Leeds and in Leeds Town Hall and in 2018 & 2021 were streamed to a large global audience through medici.tv, achieving over 4.7 million views and listens through multiple channels and platforms, including the BBC, Amadeus.tv (China), Classic FM and Mezzo.tv.

Daniil Olegovich Trifonov is a Russian pianist and composer. Described by The Globe and Mail as "arguably today's leading classical virtuoso" and by The Times as "without question the most astounding pianist of our age", Trifonov's honors include a Grammy Award win in 2018 and the Gramophone Classical Music Awards' Artist of the Year Award in 2016.
