Martin James Bartlett (born 1996) is an English classical pianist who has twice reached the keyboard finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year contest, [1] [2] winning the competition in 2014. [3]

Education

From the year 2010, [4] Bartlett was educated at The Purcell School for Young Musicians, [4] a boarding and day specialist independent school in the town of Bushey in Hertfordshire.

Life and career

Bartlett was born on 20 July 1996. He began his musical studies at the age of six, first with the piano and then two years later with bassoon and recorder. [1] He appeared on the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2012, at the age of 15, as a finalist in the keyboard category. [1] At that time, he was studying for the GCE Advanced Level in music and physics. In 2014, he was again selected as a finalist in that category. [2]

In October 2014 Bartlett was one of the musicians to record the "God Only Knows" charity single for BBC Children in Need, in collaboration with Nicola Benedetti, Stevie Wonder, Sam Smith, One Direction, Elton John, Emile Sandé, and others. The recording was broadcast on all BBC TV channels, received over 11 million hits on YouTube and also launched BBC Music. [5]

In 2015 Bartlett was one of the youngest-ever soloists to debut at the BBC Proms, performing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue , with reviews in The Daily Telegraph [6] and The Times praising his musical insight and maturity. [7]

More recently Bartlett attended the 'Progress 1000' party hosted by the London Evening Standard celebrating London's most influential people. He was nominated as one of London's most influential musicians. [8]

In 2018 Bartlett won the second prize and the audience prize of the piano competition Kissinger Klavierolymp (Kissingen Piano Olympics) in Germany. [9]

Bartlett signed a recording contract with Warner Classics in 2019. The release of his debut album "Love and Death" with works of Prokofiev, Bach, Liszt, Schumann, Wagner and Granados was announced for May 2019. [10]

On Wednesday the 6th of March 2019, Martin James Bartlett was awarded the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Rosebowl by Prince Charles. [11]

The Purcell School for Young Musicians is a specialist music school for children, located in the town of Bushey, south Hertfordshire, England, and is the oldest specialist music school in the UK. The school was awarded the UNESCO Mozart Medal in 2003, which was received on behalf of the school by Prince Charles, who is a patron of the school. Sir Simon Rattle is honorary president of the school. Many of the pupils subsequently study at top conservatories across the country including: the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 2015, the School became the first Fazioli Pianoforti Centre of Excellence.

BBC Young Musician Biennial British televised national competition for young musicians

BBC Young Musician is a televised national music competition, broadcast biennially on BBC Television and BBC Radio 3. Originally BBC Young Musician of the Year, its name was changed in 2010.

Yeol Eum Son is a South Korean classical pianist. She first drew international attention when she appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Lorin Maazel in 2004. Her awards include the Silver Medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition 2011, in which she also received the Best Chamber Concerto Performances and the Best Performance of the Commissioned Work.

Alison Balsom English trumpet player (b1978)

Alison Louise Balsom, Lady Mendes, is an English trumpet soloist, arranger, producer, and music educator. Balsom was awarded Artist of the Year at the 2013 Gramophone Awards and has won three Classic BRIT Awards and three German Echo Awards, and was a soloist at the BBC Last Night of the Proms in 2009. She was the artistic director of the 2019 Cheltenham Music Festival.

Fanny Waterman English musician

Dame Fanny Waterman was a British pianist and academic piano teacher, who is particularly known as the founder, chair and artistic director of the Leeds International Piano Competition. She was also president of the Harrogate International Music Festival.

Daniel Campbell Smith is an English singer, songwriter and record producer. He is the lead singer, primary songwriter and founder of the British rock band Bastille. In 2010, Zhang moved with her parents to Birmingham, United Kingdom, where she studied music at the junior department of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire while attending King Edward VI High School for Girls. She began studying at Harvard University in 2020.
