Maruti Bhapkar is an Indian politician who belongs to the Shiv Sena party. He is a former founder member and convenor of the Pune District for the Aam Aadmi Party. [2] He is a social and IAC activist in Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune. He was a corporator at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation from 2007 to 2012. He fought the 2009 Lok Sabha election from Maval as an independent candidate. [3]

Jan Lokpal Andolan

Maruti Bhapkar has been associated with Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal in the Jan Lokpal Andolan since the first day. He plays a significant role in Andolan-related activities in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. [4] He participated in the Jail Bharo Andolan following Anna-ji's call. He introduced a proposal supporting the Jan Lokpal Andolan in PCMC's general body meeting and it was passed with a majority.

Experimentation and implementation of Swaraj model

In his capacity as the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation corporator from 2007 to 2012, Maruti Bhapkar successfully implemented the Swaraj model in his ward. [5] [6] Every 3 months, a Jan Sabha was held in the ward to engage public consultations on various issues such as roads, parks, cultural center, slum rehabilitation, electricity and police. He implemented public proposals that went against his personal opinion. [7]

2009 Lok Sabha Election

Maruti Bhapkar fought the 2009 Lok Sabha election. His main election plank was farmers' displacement because of the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Raigad and Pune districts. [11] [12] Though he received wide support from civil society leaders including Justice Sachar, Medha Patkar, Aruna Roy and Arvind Kejriwal., [13] he lost the election to the Shiv Sena's Gajanan Babar. [14]

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is the civic body that governs Pimpri-Chinchwad which includes Pimpri, Akurdi, Chinchwad, Nigdi, and the remainder of the northwestern city limits of Pune, India. It was established on 11 October 1982. It governs an area of 181 km2 with a population of 1.72 million. The executive power of the PCMC is vested in the Municipal Commissioner, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer appointed by the Government of Maharashtra. The position is held by Shekhar Singh (IAS) during the pandemic in late December 2020. The general body of the PCMC consists of 128 directly elected councilors, popularly known as "corporators", headed by a mayor. Rahul Jadhav (BJP) was elected as the mayor and Sachin Chinchwade (BJP) as the deputy mayor in August 2018. Anjali Anish Damania is an Indian anti-corruption activist and politician. She was the convener of Maharashtra state unit of Aam Admi Party (AAP). During 2011–12, she exposed corruption in the Kondhane dam project through RTI queries. She came into the limelight in 2012, after she accused the Bharatiya Janata Party President Nitin Gadkari of having a business partnership with the Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar.
