Mary Gillen Montgomery High School is a high school in Semmes, Mobile County, Alabama, United States. Founded in 1965, the school is part of the Mobile County Public School System and is one of the largest of the county's 18 public high schools. The school is known as "MGM," "Mary G," "Mary Montgomery," or "Montgomery High".

Enrollment

MGM draws its students primarily from Semmes Middle School, which is one of the largest middle schools in the state of Alabama. The school serves grades 912.

History

MGM is named after Mary Gillen Montgomery. She was a student, teacher, and administrator in the Mobile County Public School System for 50 years. She was associated with MGM for 39 years. [5]

Facilities

The campus spans a 60-acre (240,000 m2) tract bordering US Highway 98 and Snow Road in west Mobile County, Alabama (Lat. 30.7811° N, Long. 88.2775° W). Facilities include a large football stadium, baseball stadium, gymnasium, field house/athletic center, soccer field, fine arts facilities, and a notable horticulture facility and program. [5]

Army JROTC

The school offers an Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program which emphasizes academics and physical fitness. Program participants compete in rifle and drill competitions.

School uniforms

Montgomery requires school uniforms. Ninth graders wear black shirts and upperclassmen wear white shirts. Students must wear khaki pants. [6]

Henry Watkins Collier was the 14th Governor of the U.S. state of Alabama from 1849 to 1853. He was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia, son of James Collier and Elizabeth Bouldin. Collier arrived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, from South Carolina in 1823. He sat on the Alabama Supreme Court for 18 years, of which 12 were as chief justice. He married Mary Ann Williams Battle. His only son, a doctor, died of cholera as a young man. He was a staunch believer in slavery and states' rights who was intolerant of abolition discussions. He was a friend of Dorothea Dix and promoted education, care of the mentally ill, and prison reform in Alabama. The family was closely allied with those of Rufus King and Gov. Clay. Following his term as governor, Collier was offered a seat in the United States Senate but declined and retired. He died in Bailey Springs, Alabama, of gastroenteritis.

Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS) is a school district based in unincorporated Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The system currently serves areas of Mobile County, including the city of Mobile, with the exception of the cities of Saraland, Satsuma and Chickasaw. Saraland voted to separate its schools from Mobile County in 2006, with Satsuma and Chickasaw following suit in 2012. The system serves urban, suburban, and rural areas. All schools in the system are required to adopt school uniform policies. It is the largest school system in Alabama and the 71st largest school system in the United States.

State Route 158 (SR 158) is a 21.44-mile-long (34.50 km) state highway in northern Mobile County in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Alabama. The western terminus of the highway is at an intersection with U.S. Route 98 (US 98) northwest of Wilmer, just shy of the Mississippi state line. The eastern terminus of the highway is at an intersection with U.S. Route 43 (US 43) at Saraland. The route will eventually become part of US 98 west of Mobile to the Mississippi state line as a four-lane bypass of Semmes.
