Maryland Million Sprint Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in October since 1986 primarily at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland or at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. To be eligible for the Maryland Million Sprint Handicap, a horse must be sired by a stallion who stands in Maryland. Due to that restriction the race is classified as a non-graded or "listed" stakes race and is not eligible for grading by the American Graded Stakes Committee.
The race is part of Maryland Million Day, a 12-race program held in mid-October that was the creation of renowned television sports journalist Jim McKay. The "Maryland Million" is the first State-Bred showcase event ever created. Since 1986, 27 other events in 20 states have imitated the showcase and its structure. [1]
In 1986 the race was called the First National Bank of Maryland Sprint Handicap. In 1987 and 1988 the race was called the Jiffy Lube Sprint Handicap. In 1989 the race was sponsored by the state Department of Tourism and was called the State of Maryland Sprint Handicap. From 1990 to 1993 the race was called the U.S. Air Maryland Sprint Handicap. In 1994–1995 the race was called the B.W.I. Airport Maryland Sprint Handicap. In 2003 the race was called the Susquehanna Bank Maryland Sprint Handicap and in 2007 the race was called the Fasi-Tipton Sprint Handicap. The race currently offers a purse of $100,000.
In its 30th running in 2015, the race was restricted to those horses who were sired by a stallion who stands in the state of Maryland. Both the entrant horse and their stallion must be nominated to the Maryland Million program.

Laurel Park, formerly Laurel Race Course, is an American thoroughbred racetrack located just outside Laurel, Maryland which opened in 1911. The track is 1+1⁄8 miles in circumference. Its name was changed to "Laurel Race Course" for several decades until returning to the "Laurel Park" designation in 1994.

Concern was a multi-millionaire American Thoroughbred racehorse. He was sired by top stallion Broad Brush, who in turn was a son of Ack Ack. His dam was Fara's Team. Foaled in Maryland, Concern was best known for his wins in the 1994 Breeders' Cup Classic and the grade two Arkansas Derby. Born at owner Robert Meyerhoff's Fitzhugh Farm in Phoenix, Maryland. To date, Concern is one of only four Maryland-bred horses ever to surpass the three million dollar mark in earnings. The other three were Cigar, Knicks Go and Awad. He finished racing with a record of 7-7-11 in 30 starts and career earnings of $3,079,350.
The Safely Kept Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. Open to fillies aged three, it is competed on dirt over a distance of seven furlongs. Run during October, it offers a purse of $100,000.
Safely Kept was a Maryland-bred Bay thoroughbred filly sired by Horatius. Safely Kept began her career in 1988 and won 24 of her 31 starts over the next three years. Most of her runs were against colts and geldings as at the time there were few sprint races restricted to females. She finished "in-the-money" in 30 of 31 starts. Safely Kept was euthanized the morning of April 22, 2014 for due to the infirmities of old age. She was 28 years old.

The Horatius Stakes was an American Thoroughbred horse race held in March at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. Open to three-year-old horses, it was contested over a distance of six furlongs on dirt.
Kelly Kip is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse and active stallion. In a five-year racing career which was interrupted on several occasions by sickness and injury, he ran thirty-one times and won fifteen races, most of them over a distance of six furlongs. He never won a Grade I level stakes race and never won a Breeders' Cup race or an Eclipse Award, but he set track records at several major racetracks and was regarded as one of the leading North American sprinters of the late 1990s. His trainer H. Allen Jerkens called Kelly Kip "the fastest horse I have been around".
Ben's Cat was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won 26 stakes races, including six victories in the Mister Diz Stakes and five in the Jim McKay Turf Sprint. He was a four-time Maryland-bred horse of the year and received the 2017 Secretariat Vox Populi Award. He was retired in June 2017 with a record of 32 wins from 63 starts and earnings of over $2.6 million. He died on July 18, 2017, due to complications related to colic surgery and was later buried at Laurel Park.
