Maurice George Morrow,Baron Morrow (born 27 September 1948) [1] is a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland representing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) who has been Chairman of the DUP since 2000.
The son of Ernest and Eliza Jane Morrow,He was educated at Ballygawley Primary School,Drumglass High School and Dungannon Technical College,following which he pursued a career as an estate agent. [2] Like so many other Democratic Unionist Party elected represetatives from that era he lacked a third-level education.
His political career began in 1973 when he was elected to Fermanagh District Council.[ citation needed ] He was also a councillor on Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council representing Dungannon Town. He served as a MLA of the Northern Ireland Assembly from 1998,until losing his seat in 2017. In July 2000 he became Minister for Social Development in the Northern Ireland Executive.
It was announced on 11 April 2006 that Morrow would be one of the first three members of the DUP to be created life peers, [3] giving the party its first representation in the House of Lords. He was created Baron Morrow,of Clogher Valley in the County of Tyrone,on 7 June 2006 [4] and was formally introduced to the House of Lords on 27 June. [5] . Other DUP peers appointed as "working" life peers alongside Morrow were Wallace Browne,former Lord Mayor of Belfast,and Eileen Paisley,a former vice-president of the DUP and wife of the late Leader of the DUP,Ian Paisley. At the same time,it was announced that David Trimble,former MP and former leader of the Ulster Unionists,was also being appointed as a working life peer.
After hearing testimony about children and adults forced to work in brothels,farms and factories,including that of a Romanian woman who had been kidnapped in London and forced to work as a prostitute in Ireland,he put forward a bill to the Northern Ireland Assembly:the Human Trafficking and Exploitation Act,passed in 2015,which made Northern Ireland the first and only place in the UK where the act of buying sex is a crime. The act of selling sex,by contrast,was decriminalised. [6] The law was opposed by campaigners who wished to see the total decriminalisation of sex work. [7] An application for judicial review failed on the death of the campaigner who had proposed it. [8]
Morrow is married and has two daughters. He maintains an interest in rural development. [9]
The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) is a unionist political party in Northern Ireland. The party was founded as the Ulster Unionist Council in 1905,emerging from the Irish Unionist Alliance in Ulster. Under Edward Carson,it led unionist opposition to the Irish Home Rule movement. Following the partition of Ireland,it was the governing party of Northern Ireland between 1921 and 1972. It was supported by most unionist voters throughout the conflict known as the Troubles,during which time it was often referred to as the Official Unionist Party (OUP).
Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council was a local council in Northern Ireland from 1973 until 2015. It was originally named Dungannon District Council,gaining borough status and adding "South Tyrone" to its name on 25 November 1999,after petitioning the Secretary of State for the Environment. In May 2015,under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland it merged with Cookstown District Council and Magherafelt District Council to become Mid-Ulster District Council.
The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) is a unionist,loyalist,British nationalist and national conservative political party in Northern Ireland. It was founded in 1971 during the Troubles by Ian Paisley,who led the party for the next 37 years. It is currently led by Gavin Robinson,who initially stepped in as an interim after the resignation of Jeffrey Donaldson. It is the second-largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly,and won five seats in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom at the 2024 election. The party has been mostly described as right-wing and socially conservative,being anti-abortion and opposing same-sex marriage. The DUP sees itself as defending Britishness and Ulster Protestant culture against Irish nationalism and republicanism. It is also Eurosceptic and supported Brexit.
James Henry Molyneaux,Baron Molyneaux of Killead,KBE,PC,often known as Jim Molyneaux,was a unionist politician from Northern Ireland who served as leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) from 1979 to 1995,and as the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Antrim from 1970 to 1983,and later Lagan Valley from 1983 to 1997. An Orangeman,he was also Sovereign Grand Master of the Royal Black Institution from 1971 to 1995,and a leading member of the Conservative Monday Club.
Nigel Alexander Dodds,Baron Dodds of Duncairn,,is a Northern Irish unionist politician and barrister serving as Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in the House of Lords since 2021. He previously served as deputy leader of the DUP from 2008 to 2021 and leader of the DUP in the House of Commons from 2010 to 2019.
Kenneth Wiggins Maginnis,Baron Maginnis of Drumglass,is a Northern Irish politician and life peer. Since December 2020,he has been suspended from the House of Lords,where he formerly sat for the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP). He was the Ulster Unionist Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Fermanagh and South Tyrone from 1983 to 2001.

She previously served as First Minister of Northern Ireland from 2016 to 2017 and 2020 to 2021 and leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) from 2015 to 2021. Foster was the first woman to hold either position. She is a Member of the House of Lords,having previously been a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Fermanagh and South Tyrone from 2003 to 2021.
Eileen Emily Paisley,Baroness Paisley of St George's,Baroness Bannside,is a Northern Irish Unionist politician from Belfast. She is the widow of Ian Paisley,Lord Bannside. Baroness Paisley became a life peer in 2006 and retired from the House of Lords on 30 October 2017. She is a vice-president of the Democratic Unionist Party.
