The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPI MiS) in Leipzig is a research institute of the Max Planck Society. Founded on March 1, 1996, the institute works on projects which apply mathematics in various areas of natural sciences, in particular physics, biology, chemistry and material science.
The institute has an extensive visitors programme which has made Leipzig a main place for research in applied mathematics.
The MPI MiS is a member of ERCOM (European Research Centres in Mathematics).

Sundararaman Ramanan is an Indian mathematician who works in the area of algebraic geometry, moduli spaces and Lie groups. He is one of India's leading mathematicians and recognised as an expert in algebraic geometry, especially in the area of moduli problems. He has also worked in differential geometry: his joint paper with MS Narasimhan on universal connections has been influential. It enabled SS Chern and B Simons to introduce what is known as the Chern-Simons invariant, which has proved useful in theoretical physics.

Waldyr Alves Rodrigues, Jr. born at Araraquara, SP, Brazil, obtained his B.Sc. in physics in 1968 at the University of São Paulo (Brazil), where he has been a research student of Mário Schenberg and became an assistant professor in 1969. He then moved to Torino, Italy, where he did postgraduate studies at the Scuola di Perfezionamento in Fisica Nucleare and obtained a degree in theoretical nuclear physics in 1971. Heather A. Harrington is an applied mathematician interested in applied algebra and geometry, dynamical systems, chemical reaction network theory, topological data analysis, and systems biology. Since 2020, she is professor of mathematics and Royal Society University Research Fellow at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, where she heads the Algebraic Systems Biology group. In 2023, she became a director at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, where she is also leading the interinstitutional Center for Systems Biology Dresden (CSBD) together with partners from the Technical University Dresden and the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems.

Her research is focused on mathematical statistics and algebraic statistics, applied and computational algebraic geometry and random graph (network) models. She was elected to the International Statistics Institute in 2015.
