Medical University of the Americas (MUA) is a private medical school on the island of Nevis. It is owned by R3 Education, Inc. which also owns Saba University School of Medicine and St. Matthew's University. [1] MUA offers an internationally accredited MD program that confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, [2] as well as multiple pre-medical programs. [3]

Curriculum

Students in the MD program [4] will spend two years (semesters 1-5) on campus in Basic Science [5] , followed by two years (semesters 6-10) doing rotations in the U.S. and Canada during Clinical Medicine. [6] The first two years consist of classroom and lab-based learning. The next two years comprise required and elective rotations at affiliated teaching hospitals, clinics and medical centers (including ACGME-approved sites) in the U.S. and Canada.

After completing Basic Science, MUA requires students to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 prior to starting clinical rotations. After completing rotations, students are required to pass the USMLE Step 2 CK before graduating.

For students that lack the medical education background to proceed directly into the 4-year MD program, MUA offers multiple pre-medical programs [7] for those with different knowledge levels, including:

Accreditation and approvals

The MUA MD program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission of Colleges of Medicine. [8] The MUA pre-medical programs are accredited by the St. Kitts & Nevis Ministry of Education. [9]

MUA is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools [10] and has received a comparability determination from the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA).

Medical University of the Americas has been approved to participate in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford and Grad PLUS Loan programs, which are both administered by the U.S. Department of Education. [11] [12]

On July 27, 2017, Medical Board of California voted to approve and recognize the Medical University of the Americas, Nevis. The approval recognizes credentials of students who matriculated as of May 2015 onward (when a new curriculum was implemented). [13]

MUA is approved by the New York State Education Department for clinical training, residency and licensure in New York. [14] MUA is approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to allow students to complete more than 12 weeks of clinical clerkships in New York State. MUA is one of eight Caribbean medical schools so approved by NYSED.

MUA has received approval by the Commission for Independent Education, Florida Department of Education for licensure. [14]

Academic outcomes

According to the U.S. Department of Education, 25% of U.S. medical students (7 out of 28) completed the MD program on time in 2023. [15]

Pass rates of its students and graduates on the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) in calendar year 2023 were as follows: [15]

Medical school in the United States is a graduate program with the purpose of educating physicians in the undifferentiated field of medicine. Such schools provide a major part of the medical education in the United States. Most medical schools in the US confer upon graduates a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, while some confer a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine is a medical degree conferred by the 38 osteopathic medical schools in the United States. DO and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees are equivalent: a DO graduate may become licensed as a physician or surgeon and thus have full medical and surgical practicing rights in all 50 US states. As of 2023, there were 186,871 osteopathic physicians and medical students in DO programs across the United States. Osteopathic medicine emerged historically from the quasi-medical practice of osteopathy, but has become a distinct and proper medical profession.

Saint James School of Medicine (SJSM) is a private for-profit offshore medical school which had two basic science campuses, one in British Overseas Territory of Anguilla, and the other in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, it was considered one school with two campuses. Saint James confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. In 2024 Saint James School of Medicine decided to consolidate at its St. Vincent location and closed its location on Anguilla.

Oceania University of Medicine (OUM) is an Independent Samoa-based medical school established in 2002 and operated through a public-private partnership between the Government of Samoa and e-Medical Education, LLC, a Florida-based medical education management company. Its hybrid curriculum of distance-learning preclinicals and face-to-face clinical rotations enrolls 333 students, as of March 2024, and 215 graduates are currently in residency/internship training or practicing medicine in numerous global locations, primarily Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Samoa, and the US.

St. George's University School of Medicine is the medical school of St. George's University located in St. George's, Grenada. The school was founded by Charles R. Modica on July 23, 1976. Because of its size, the school placed more doctors into first-year US residency positions than any other medical school in the world between 2011 and 2012. It was rated by The Princeton Review as one of the "Best 168 Medical Schools" in 2012. There are 158 accredited MD-granting institutions in the United States.
