Megaplex is the sixth studio album by American indie rock band We Are Scientists. It was released on April 27, 2018, by 100% Records. [1]
At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, Megaplex received an average score of 65, which indicates "generally favorable reviews", based on 7 reviews. [2] Steven Loftin of The Line of Best Fit gave Megaplex a rating of 7.5/10, declaring that "We Are Scientists have been back in the lab and are continuing to push themselves outside of their own boundaries" and particularly highlighting the album's use of electronic sounds and the album's "emotive life force". [3] At The Skinny , George Scully rated the album three stars out of five, saying that "party gun cocked and loaded, New York pop-rock armoury We Are Scientists fire a shiny pop bullet with Megaplex, the band's sixth album and a self-proclaimed "stacked-up compound of entertainment." [4] Writing for PopMatters, Chris Conaton gave Megaplex six stars out of ten, remarking that "after a half-dozen albums, We Are Scientists are far from running out of hooks, but these days they seem to deploy those hooks better when they are stretching themselves." [1]
In the album's release announcement, frontman Keith Murray joked "It takes a lot of hard work, a lot of honing of craft to make it to six records. I mean, the Velvet Underground never made six albums. The Smiths didn't. Pavement, Guns N' Roses, The Stooges — none of them could do it. So, I guess we're just objectively better than those bands now? It's just a mathematical fact, right?" [5] He further added, "Our brilliant work in pop song writing is unsurpassed, [...] and will probably make the We Are Scientists name live beyond eternity." [5]
The band toured the United Kingdom in support of the new album. [6] This tour ran from March 28 to May 13, 2018, opening at The Joiners in Southampton and concluding in Sheffield after dates in sixteen cities. [7]
The first single to be released from Megaplex was the opening track, 'One In, One Out'. This was released with an accompanying video in February 2018. [7] "Your Light Has Changed", "Not Another World", and "Heart is a Weapon" were subsequently released as singles.
The deluxe edition of Megaplex was released on April 19, 2019, it features fourteen additional tracks and is named for the 2009 American action horror film Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. [8] The additional tracks comprise three full band bonus tracks, four acoustic songs, five demos, and one remix. [8]

Art Brut are an English indie rock band. Their debut album, Bang Bang Rock & Roll, was released on 30 May 2005, with its follow up, It's a Bit Complicated, released on 25 June 2007. Named after French painter Jean Dubuffet's definition of outsider art – art by prisoners, loners, the mentally ill, and other marginalized people, and made without thought to imitation or presentation – South London's Art Brut were tagged by NME as part of the "Art Wave" scene that also included bands such as The Rakes, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. The band released further albums, Art Brut vs Satan in 2009 and Brilliant! Tragic! in 2011. A fifth album, Wham! Bang! Pow! Let's Rock Out!", was released in 2018.
We Are Scientists is a New York City-based rock band that formed in Berkeley, California, in 1999. It consists primarily of guitarist and vocalist Keith Murray and bass guitarist Chris Cain, with drummer Keith Carne joining the band in the studio and for live performances since 2013.
Twilight of the Innocents is the fifth studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 2 July 2007, through Infectious Records. Following the departure of guitarist Charlotte Hatherley in early 2006, the band began recording their next album in New York City at Bang Studios, which they had leased from a friend of a friend. Frontman Tim Wheeler produced the recordings, with bassist Mark Hamilton and drummer McMurray acting as associate producers. Described as a pop and power pop album, Twilight of the Innocents placed emphasis on Hamilton's bass parts.
The Twilight Sad are a Scottish post-punk/indie rock band, comprising James Graham (vocals), Andy MacFarlane (guitar), Johnny Docherty (bass), Brendan Smith (keyboards) and Grant Hutchison (drums). They have released five studio albums, as well as several EPs, live recordings and singles. Their 2007 debut album, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, drew widespread acclaim from critics, who noted Graham's thick Scottish accent and MacFarlane's dense sonic walls of shoegazing guitar and wheezing accordion. The Twilight Sad's notoriously loud live performances have been described as "completely ear-splitting", and the band toured for the album across Europe and the United States throughout 2007 and 2008. Sessions inspired by stripped-down and reworked live performances yielded the 2008 mini-album, Here, It Never Snowed. Afterwards It Did.
Forget the Night Ahead is the second studio album by Scottish indie rock band The Twilight Sad, released by FatCat Records on 22 September 2009 in the US, and on 5 October 2009 in the UK. The album was produced by guitarist Andy MacFarlane and recorded and mixed by Paul Savage at Chem19 Studios in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The album features the singles "I Became a Prostitute", "Seven Years of Letters", and "The Room".

Chvrches are a Scottish synth-pop band from Glasgow, formed in September 2011. The band consists of Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, Martin Doherty and, unofficially since 2018, Jonny Scott. Mostly deriving from the synth-pop genre, Chvrches also incorporate indietronica, indie pop, and electronic dance into their sound.
Swim Deep are a British indie pop band formed in Birmingham, England. The band currently consists of Austin Williams (vocals), Cavan McCarthy (bass), James Balmont (keyboards), Robbie Wood (guitar), and Thomas Fiquet (drums).
Overdrive is the 19th studio album by Japanese pop punk trio Shonen Knife. It was released on April 14, 2014 in Europe, and on April 16, 2014 in Japan. According to band leader Naoko Yamano, because their album Free Time (2010) was heavily influenced by punk rock, and Pop Tune (2012) had explored a more pop-oriented sound, Overdrive was a chance for the band to explore a more hard rock sound. The album's lyrics cover a wide array of topics, from green tea, fortune cookies, and cats.
English Graffiti is the third studio album by English rock band The Vaccines. It was produced by Dave Fridmann, with co-production from Cole M. Greif-Neill at Fridmann's New York studio. The album was released on 25 May 2015 through Columbia Records and charted at #2 upon release. The album marked the band's first release in two years, following the Melody Calling EP, and their first full studio album release in three, following Come of Age in 2012. Young stated that Fridmann was chosen due to both his track record in making "consistently fantastic records". It is the last album recorded with drummer Pete Robertson, who left the band after completing their 2016 U.S. tour.
Painting of a Panic Attack is the fifth and final studio album by Scottish indie rock band Frightened Rabbit. The album was released on 8 April 2016, through Atlantic Records. It is the band's only studio album to feature guitarist and keyboardist Simon Liddell, a touring member who joined them in a permanent capacity after the departure of Gordon Skene. After frontman and founding member Scott Hutchison's disappearance and subsequent death in 2018, the remaining members retired the Frightened Rabbit name, leaving Painting of a Panic Attack as their final album.
Mothers is the second studio album by British indie rock band Swim Deep. It was released on 2 October 2015 on Chess Club Records, a subsidiary of RCA. Following the success of their debut album, Where the Heaven Are We, Swim Deep began to record Mothers in London and Brussels in late 2014. Mothers was originally scheduled for release on 19 September 2015 but was pushed back until 2 October.
Stay Together is the sixth studio album by Kaiser Chiefs, released on 7 October 2016. The album's name is a reference to the opening track "We Stay Together". The first single from the album, "Parachute", was released on 14 June 2016. The second single, "Hole In My Soul" was released 18 August 2016 and the third and final single, "We Stay Together" was released on 9 December 2016. The album marked a notable shift in the band's sound, incorporating more electronic and synth-pop elements.
Muna is an American indie pop band consisting of Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson. They released two studio albums with RCA Records, About U (2017) and Saves the World (2019), before signing with independent label Saddest Factory Records, which released their third studio album, Muna, in June 2022.
After Laughter is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Paramore. It was released on May 12, 2017, through Fueled by Ramen, as a follow-up to their 2013 self-titled album. After Laughter was produced by guitarist Taylor York alongside previous collaborator Justin Meldal-Johnsen. It is the band's first album since the return of drummer Zac Farro and the departure of former bassist Jeremy Davis. After Laughter represents a complete departure from the pop-punk and alternative rock sound of the band's previous releases and, in direct contrast to its upbeat and vibrant sound, touches on themes of exhaustion, depression and anxiety.
Angry Cyclist is the eleventh studio album by Scottish folk rock duo The Proclaimers. The album was released on 10 August 2018 on the label Cooking Vinyl. The album spawned the titular single "Angry Cyclist", accompanied by a music video. Charting at No. 2 in Scotland, as well as at No. 17 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 3 on the Indie Charts, the release of Angry Cyclist was followed by a promotional tour of the United Kingdom, Canada, Iceland, Asia and Australia.
The Balance is the third studio album by Welsh band Catfish and the Bottlemen. It was released on 26 April 2019 through Island Records and Capitol Records. It was preceded by the lead single "Longshot", which reached number 25 on the UK Singles Chart, also becoming the band's highest-charting song on the chart. The album was supported by a European tour, which began in April 2019. The Balance received mixed reviews from critics. The album is also the last album to feature drummer Bob Hall and guitarist Johnny Bond, who both left in 2021.
Hypersonic Missiles is the debut studio album by English musician Sam Fender, released on 13 September 2019 by Polydor Records. The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, number one on the Scottish Albums Chart, and number six on the Irish Albums Chart. It sold over 41,000 copies in the first week on the UK Albums Chart and was the 11th best selling vinyl album of 2019. As of October 2021, the album has sold over 230,000 copies.
Prioritise Pleasure is the second studio album by the British musician Self Esteem, aka Rebecca Lucy Taylor, released on 22 October 2021. Most of the album was written before the COVID-19 pandemic but its recording was delayed by the subsequent lockdowns. The album was promoted by several singles, including the lead single, "I Do This All the Time". It received acclaim from critics, with several listing it as one of the best albums of 2021, and charted at number 11 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was nominated for the 2022 Mercury Prize.
Motordrome is the third album by Danish singer and songwriter MØ, released on 28 January 2022 through Columbia Records. It was announced alongside the release of the singles "Brad Pitt" and "Goosebumps" on 12 November 2021, and also includes the singles "Live to Survive" and "Kindness". MØ embarked on a tour in Europe and North America from February 2022 in support of the album.
