Commodore Melanie Suzanne "Mel" Robinson, CBE , ADC is a retired British senior Royal Naval Reserve officer. She was Commander of Maritime Reserves from February 2020 until retirement in July 2023. [2]

Early life and education

Robinson has a degree from Cardiff University. [3] She also has a Master of Science (MSc) degree in human resource management from the Open University. [4]

She was commissioned in Supplementary List of the Royal Navy as a sub-lieutenant on 6 January 1993. [5] She was appointed to the Trained Strength on 15 October 1994. [5] Her early career was as a warfare officer, serving in a number of frigates and minor war vessels. [3]

As commander of the Cardiff University Royal Naval Unit (now Wales URNU) and its training ship HMS Express, she was one of the first women to command a Royal Navy patrol vessel. [3] [6] [7] She transferred to the Royal Naval Reserve with the rank of commander in November 2015. [8] She was promoted to commodore on 4 February 2020, and was then one of four women to hold that rank. [6] [9]

Robinson was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2022 Birthday Honours. [10]

In 1998, she married to Guy Robinson. [1] [11] Vice Admiral Robinson is a fellow Royal Navy officer who has been serving with NATO as Chief of Staff to Supreme Allied Commander Transformation since 2021. [12] They have two children. [11]

Admiral of the Fleet Sir Edward Beckwith Ashmore, was a senior Royal Navy officer. He saw active service in the Second World War and later commanded two frigates before achieving high command in the Navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff in the mid-1970s and in that role he advised the incoming Labour government on a major defence review and on the implications of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. He went on to be acting Chief of the Defence Staff, serving briefly in a caretaker capacity following the death of his predecessor.

Convoy commodore also known as commodore, convoys was the title of a civilian put in charge of the good order of the merchant ships in the British convoys used during World War II. Usually the convoy commodore was a retired naval officer or a senior merchant captain drawn from the Royal Naval Reserve. He was aboard one of the merchant ships. The convoy commodore was distinguished from the commander of the convoy's escort, always a naval officer.

Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, is a retired Royal Navy officer. After serving as a submarine commander, he commanded a frigate and then commanded an aircraft carrier on operational patrol off Sierra Leone. He went on to be Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and then Commander-in-Chief Fleet. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval staff, the professional head of the Royal Navy, from July 2009 to April 2013. In this role he advised the British Government on the deployment of naval forces during operations around Libya. He was succeeded by Admiral Sir George Zambellas in April 2013.

He went on to be Flag Officer, Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland, Commander United Kingdom Maritime Forces and Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff before being appointed Fleet Commander and Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff. Jones served as First Sea Lord from April 2016 to June 2019.
