Membership of Kosovo in international sports federations

Kosovo was a part of several international sports federations in the 1990s, and has applied to become a member of many more after its 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia.

Background

Kosovo is a full member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the European Olympic Committees (EOC); membership by the former was granted to Kosovo's Olympic Committee on 9 December 2014. The country has participated in both the Winter and Summer Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Kosovo won a gold medal, and in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, it won two.

Prior to IOC and IPC recognition, Kosovar athletes took part in the Special Olympics starting in 2003. [1] [2] A body known as the Special Olympics Kosovo was established to provide support for Kosovan special olympics athletes. [3] .The Paralympic Committee of Kosovo won granted provisional membership status by the International Paralympic Committee on 16 July 2022. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] Full membership was granted at the following IPC General Assembly in Manama, Bahrain on 28 September 2023. [9] Is expected that the Kosovar delegation is on the way to make its Paralympic début at 2024 Summer Paralympics. [10] [11] [12] [13]

Kosovo participated in a wide multi-sport event for the first time at the 2015 European Games held in Baku, Azerbaijan.The first participation from athletes from the country were at the fourth 'World Dwarf Games' in Rambouillet, France in 2005, [14] Kosovo also participated at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia, and in 2015 IHF Emerging Nations Championship, among others.

The 2024 Summer Paralympics, also known as the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, and branded as Paris 2024, were the 17th Summer Paralympic Games, an international multi-sport parasports event governed by the International Paralympic Committee. The Games were held in Paris, France, from 28 August to 8 September 2024, and featured 549 medal events across 22 sports. These games marked the first time Paris hosted the Summer Paralympics and the second time France hosted the Paralympic Games, following the 1992 Winter Paralympics in Tignes and Albertville. Kosovo participated at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 5 to 21 August 2016. It was represented by the Olympic Committee of Kosovo (KOK/OKK) with a delegation of eight people, including three men and five women. Most of them were awarded places in their respective sporting events through wild card entries and Tripartite Commission invitations. Two Kosovar athletes, on the other hand, qualified directly for the Olympics on merit: judoka Nora Gjakova and Majlinda Kelmendi, the lone returning Olympian on the team after representing Albania four years earlier in London. The world's top-ranked judoka in her weight category and the frontrunner for the country's first Olympic medal, Kelmendi was selected to become Kosovo's flag bearer in the opening ceremony.

Nora Gjakova is a Kosovo Albanian judoka. She received a gold medal after winning the women's 57 kg judo competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. In August 2021, she was awarded the Honor of the Nation Decoration of Albania by the President of Albania.

Since Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia, international recognition of Kosovo has been mixed, and the international community continues to be divided on the issue. The Republic of Kosovo is member of some international intergovernmental and international non-governmental organisations.

Distria Krasniqi is a Kosovar Albanian judoka. She is a two-time Olympic medallist and won the gold medal in the women's 48-kg judo event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the silver medal in the women's 52-kg judo event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Krasniqi is also a two-time World Championships bronze medallist and two-time European champion. In August 2021, she was awarded the Honor of the Nation Decoration of Albania by the President of Albania.
