Mercy Apondi Obiero born on August 27, 1978, in Nairobi [1] is a Kenyan weightlifter.
Obiero's brother David introduced her to weightlifting in 1999. [2] [3] Before then, she had played hockey. [4] Alongside Mercy, David competed at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games. [5] [6]
Mercy Obiero made her international debut at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester where she failed to get a result in the 48 kg weight class. [7] Four years later, she participated at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where she finished in seventh place in the 63 kg weight class. In 2010, she competed [8] at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and finished in fifth position in the 69 kg weight class. [9] Obiero competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London where she received an unused quota spot. Obiero finished 13th in the 69 kg category, but later was moved up to 11th position (last among completed lifters), due to disqualifications. [10] Her total was 181 kg. [11] By competing in London, Obiero was the first Kenyan woman weightlifter at the Olympics and the second from Africa after Uganda’s Irene Ajambo. [12] At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Obiero finished in eighth place in the women's 69 kg weight class. [13]
By 2020, Obiero had retired from competition, and became a trainer for one of her daughters and a granddaughter. [4]

Erika Yuriko Iris Yamasaki is an Australian weightlifter. The daughter of Minoru Yamasaki and Ann Alvisio, she started Weightlifting in 2000, when she was tested in a talent identification program, along with her brother John Yamasaki. Erika first started to represent Australia in 2003 at the Oceania Championships, Niue Island. She has now competed at several international events, including Oceania Championships, World Championships, World Cup, Commonwealth Championships, Pacific and Commonwealth Games.
Ele Opeloge is a Samoan weightlifter. She was the first Samoan to win an Olympic medal, winning silver in the women's +75 kg category at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Mariam Usman is a Nigerian weightlifter. She competes in the women's +75 kg class, where she is a four-time African Champion and gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games. Smith competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and finished 12th in the Women's 58 kg division. After missing the 2016 Summer Olympics following an injury, she finished eighth in the 59 kg at the 2020 Summer Olympics. At the 2023 European Weightlifting Championships she won the gold in Clean and Jerk and the bronze in the 64 kg total category. She failed to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Seen Lee is an Australian weightlifter. She won a bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and a silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She represented Australia in weightlifting at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Gareth Irfon Evans is a Welsh weightlifter. He has competed in the 62 kg and 69 kg weight categories, and was selected to represent Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.
Luisa Fatiaki Taitapu Peters is a police officer and retired weightlifter from the Cook Islands, who competes in the +75 kg weight division. She participated in two Olympics and three Commonwealth Games with the best result of fifth place in 2018. She won a bronze medal at the 2015 Pacific Games.

Abeer Abdelrahman Khalil Mahmoud is an Egyptian weightlifter. She was born in Alexandria, Egypt. She competed at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in the -69 kg and -75 kg weight categories, respectively, and finished in fifth place at both Games. In 2016, Abdelrahman retroactively became the first Egyptian woman to win an Olympic medal when the original gold, silver, and bronze medal winners were disqualified due to doping. Abdelrahman is now the silver medal winner for the 75 kg event in the 2012 Summer Olympics, coming second to Spain's Lidia Velentin. The first Egyptian woman to receive her Olympic medal on the podium was Sara Ahmed for her bronze medal performance in the women's 69 kg at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
