Sir Michael Vernon Lockett, KCVO (born 1948) is a British businessman, public relations expert, marketer and events organiser.

The son of an Army officer, [1] Lockett was born in 1948; [2] he did not go to university [1] and worked for Grey Advertising from 1970 to 1975, [2] when he started his own business live marketing, WCT Live; he remained its chairman until 1997, when he sold it to Caribiner International Inc. for $11.7m; [3] he was the chairman of Caribiner Europe until 1999. [4]

Lockett was in charge of the Prime Minister John Major's presentation unit during the 1992 general election. [1] In 1993, he founded CCO Conferences, a company which he chaired and which was responsible for organising Conservative Party conferences from 1994, removing the rows of on-stage seating for senior politicians and advising them to remove their jackets when participating in question and answer sessions with party members. Lockett also organised Major's 1997 election tour and under William Hague was commissioned to make the party conferences "bright, vibrant and open" in appearance. [5] He continued to be chairman of CCO Conferences until 2009, [2] and assisted organising David Cameron's leadership campaign in 2005. [1]

Lockett had marketed British Airways's Club Europe in the early 1990s, bringing him into contact with BA's chief executive officer, Bob Ayling, who was also chairman of the public-sector New Millennium Experience Company, which was overseeing the delivery of the Millennium celebrations in the United Kingdom. Ayling invited Lockett to be project director overseeing the Millennium Dome's opening night; [5] his company, Live Productions, was hired to organise the event and attracted criticism after failing to post 3,000 of the 10,500 public tickets on time. From 2000 to 2008, Lockett was chairman of Live Communications, [2] and was hired to organise the Queen's Golden Jubilee concert in 2002; [1] he was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order for his services. [7] Between 2011 and 2013, he was chief executive of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation [2] and was therefore responsible for organising the Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the River Thames. [1] For this work, he was promoted to Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 2012 Jubilee Honours. [8] He was also involved in organising the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony in London. His company, Aura Events (of which he was chairman from 2005 to 2012 [2] ), was also responsible for the opening of The Shard building in London. [1]

The Millennium Dome, also referred to simply as The Dome, is the original name of a large dome-shaped building originally used to house the Millennium Experience, a major exhibition celebrating the beginning of the third millennium. It is the ninth largest building in the world by usable volume. Located on the Greenwich Peninsula in South East London, England, the exhibition was open to the public from 1 January to 31 December 2000. From 1996 to 2000, he was the CEO of British Airways. He also served as chairman of Her Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service, Dwr Cmru, and Dyson. Ayling was awarded a CBE in the Queen's 2018 Birthday Honors List.

Millennium Dome raid

The Millennium Dome raid was an attempted robbery of the Millennium Dome's diamond exhibition in Greenwich, South East London occurring on 7 November 2000. A local gang planned to ram-raid the De Beers diamond exhibition which was being held in the dome at the time. The gang had then planned to escape via the Thames in a speedboat. The De Beers diamond exhibition had a number of jewels on display, including the Millennium Star, a flawless 203.04 carats (40.608 g) gem with an estimated worth of £200 million and considered one of the most perfect gems in the world. Also on display were priceless blue diamonds. The attempted robbery was foiled by the Flying Squad of the Metropolitan Police Service, as a result of information from Kent Police Serious Crime who already had the gang members under surveillance for their suspected roles in a number of unsuccessful armoured vehicle robberies. The operation to foil the robbery was the biggest operation undertaken in the Flying Squad's history and at trial the judge in the case commended the way it was carried out.

The year 2012 marked the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II being the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952. The only previous British royal Diamond Jubilee celebration was in 1897, for the 60th anniversary of the 1837 accession of Queen Victoria.

Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant

The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant was a parade on 3 June 2012 of 670 boats on the Tideway of the River Thames in London as part of the celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. The Queen, Prince Philip and other members of the Royal Family were aboard vessels that took part in the parade. The parade was organised by the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation, and funded by private donations and sponsorship. The pageant master was Adrian Evans.

Gloriana is a 90-foot-long (27 m) British royal barge. She was privately commissioned as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II for her 2012 Diamond Jubilee, and was the lead vessel in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant.

Gibraltar Diamond Jubilee Flotilla

The Gibraltar Diamond Jubilee Flotilla, inspired by the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant held in England the previous day, celebrated the Queen's sixty years of reign. The parade of vessels around the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar on 4 June 2012 was one of numerous events scheduled that year in honour of the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. The flotilla was hosted by Ocean Village Marina, a marina north of Gibraltar Harbour, on the Westside of Gibraltar. Participation in the event exceeded expectations, with 161 vessels in the flotilla.

The list of Diamond Jubilee Honours 2012 was released on 13 September 2012 and made appointments and promotions within the Royal Victorian Order to recognise contributions to the celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012. The Royal Victorian Order is a dynastic order of knighthood recognising distinguished personal service to the Sovereign, and remains in the personal gift of the monarch.
