Michael MacGrath is an Irish judge and lawyer who has served as a Judge of the High Court since January 2018.

Early life

MacGrath attended University College Dublin from where he received BCL and LLM degrees. [1] He subsequently attended the King's Inns. [2]

He was called to the Bar in 1984 and became a senior counsel in 2000. [2] His practice was predominantly focused on civil law and commercial law. [3]

He was counsel for the Barr Tribunal and he represented the Attorney General of Ireland and the public interest at the Moriarty Tribunal. [4] [5]

In addition to his legal practice, he was the chairperson of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission between 2005 and 2009, [2] and was the chair of the Mining Board from 2013. [6]

MacGrath was a tutor in law at University College Dublin. [1] He was the editor of a text on engineering law in 1989. [7] He has acted as the external examiner for Tort law the King's Inns since 2009. [3]

Judicial career

MacGrath was appointed to the High Court in January 2018. [8] He was appointment came following a vacancy created at the retirement of Henry Abbott. [9]

He has presided over cases involving commercial law, [10] regulatory law, [11] judicial review, [12] employment law, [13] and medical negligence. [14]

In the midst of a judicial review hearing in 2019, a lay litigant unsuccessfully attempted to effect a citizen's arrest against him. [15] In 2019, he decided against the Friends of the Irish Environment which sought to challenge governmental policy on climate change and reducing carbon emissions. [16] The decision was appealed to the Supreme Court of Ireland with a hearing in June 2020. [17]

Peter Thomas Kelly is an Irish lawyer who held various judicial roles between 1996 and 2020. He began his career working in the civil service, before becoming a successful barrister. He was first appointed a Judge of the High Court in 1996, having an instrumental role in the establishment of the Commercial Court division of the court in 2004. He was one of the first judges appointed to a new Court of Appeal when it was established in 2014. He returned to the High Court in 2015 on becoming the President of the High Court, a role which he held until retiring in 2020. He was an ex officio member of the Supreme Court of Ireland while President of the High Court.

Gerard William Augustine Hogan, is an Irish judge, lawyer and academic who has served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland since October 2021. He previously served as Advocate General of the European Court of Justice from 2018 to 2021, a Judge of the Court of Appeal from 2014 to 2018 and a Judge of the High Court from 2010 to 2014. Hogan first worked as a barrister and lecturer in law specialising in constitutional and administrative law.

Mary Irvine is an Irish judge who was the President of the Irish High Court between 2020 and 2022. She first practiced as a barrister. She was a judge of the High Court between 2007 and 2014. She was a judge of the Court of Appeal from 2014 to 2019 and served as a judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland from May 2019 until becoming President of the High Court on 18 June 2020. She was an ex officio member of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal.

Michael Anthony Moriarty, SC is a retired Irish judge who served as a Judge of the High Court from 1996 to 2018 and a Judge of the Circuit Court from 1987 to 1996.

Charles Francis Meenan is an Irish judge who has served as a Judge of the Court of Appeal since July 2023. He previously served as a Judge of the High Court from 2017 and 2023.

Séamus Philip Woulfe is an Irish judge and lawyer who has served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland since July 2020. He previously served as Attorney General of Ireland from 2017 to 2020.
