Michael McCown is an American operatic tenor, based at the Oper Frankfurt. While many of the ninety roles in his repertoire are comprimario, he has portrayed lead roles such as Britten's Captain Vere, Abott and Tempter, and Nebukadnezar.

Career

McCown was born in Abilene, Texas, the son of a pastor. [1] He studied voice in Boston, [2] and performed during his studies at the Aldeburgh Festival and at the Utah Opera. [3]

McCown became a member of the Oper Frankfurt in 2001. [1] He has a repertoire of more than 90 roles, [2] appearing in Frankfurt as Normanno in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor , the Shepherd in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde , Antonio in The Tempest by Thomas Adès, the Shepherd in Enescu's Œdipe , the Duke of Cornwall in Reimann's Lear and the Prior in Angels in America  [ de ] by Peter Eötvös. [3] He also appeared as Don Alvar in Meyerbeer's L'Africaine , Fedotik Tri sestry by Eötvös. In 2016, he portrayed Captain Vere in Britten's Billy Budd and, according to a review, "conveyed all the conflicted forces preying on the character's mind". [4] Roles in 2020 included the Second Jew in Salome staged by Barrie Kosky. In 2021 he first sang Leonard in a new production of Nielsen's Maskarade , Rouvel in Giordano's Fedora , and Tinca in Puccini's Il tabarro . He appeared in 2022 in new productions of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte as the First Armed Man, of Tchaikovsky's The Sorceress as Paisi, and of Puccini's Madama Butterfly as Yamadori. [2] In 2023 he performed lead roles in a double bill of Britten's church parables at the Bockenheimer Depot, the double role of Abbot and Tempter in The Prodigal Son , and Nebuchadnezzar in The Burning Fiery Furnace . [1] [5] Axel Zibulski from the FAZ noted that McCown showed the "extreme lightness and luminous agility" ("extreme Leichtigkeit und leuchtende Wendigkeit") that characterised the voice of the composer's partner Peter Pears with whose voice in mind the music was written. [6]

He performed as a guest in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden. He appeared as Walter von der Vogelweide in Wagner's Tannhäuser at the Aalto Theater in Essen, [3] and as Scaramuccio in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He was a principal with the English National Opera from 1978 to 1985, and performed at leading European and North American opera houses after he was recognised at the Bayreuth Festival in 1981, returning for 15 seasons. Clark appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in 112 performances over 15 seasons, in roles such as Stewa in Janácek's Jenůfa, Herod in Salome by Richard Strauss, the Captain in Alban Berg's Wozzeck and Captain Vere in Britten's Billy Budd. Barry Millington from The Guardian summarised: "Though he made his career as a comprimario tenor, putatively subordinate to the principal roles, his incisively focused voice, hyperactive stage presence and musico-dramatic intelligence frequently conspired to make him the main attraction."

Adrian Eröd is an Austrian operatic baritone. He is the son of composer Iván Erőd.

Andrea Velis was an American operatic tenor who had a lengthy association with the Metropolitan Opera that spanned 33 seasons. Considered a highly skilled character actor, he excelled in supporting roles, often to great comedic effect. His voice is preserved on several recordings made for Live from the Metropolitan Opera and the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts.

Heather Engebretson is a Chinese-American operatic soprano who made a career mostly in Europe. Based at German opera ensembles for several years, she has worked freelance from 2017, and widened her repertoire from coloratura roles to leading characters such as Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Lance Ryan is a Canadian operatic tenor, who has worked from Germany since 2005. He is known for singing Siegfried in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, which he performed at opera houses in Europe including the Bayreuth Festival. He performed the title roles of Verdi's Otello and Britten's Peter Grimes.

Domen Križaj is a Slovenian operatic baritone who has performed internationally, based in Germany. As a member of the Oper Frankfurt, he has appeared in major roles including Mozart's Papageno, Albert in Massenet's Werther, and the Count in Capriccio by Richard Strauss.

Brian Michael Moore is an American operatic tenor, based at the Oper Frankfurt. He has performed leading roles in the United States and Europe, including Remendado in Bizet's Carmen in Los Angeles, Mozart's Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, and Britten's Prodigal Son in Frankfurt.
