Michael O'Hare (born June 1981) is a British chef from Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. [1] He was chef-patron at The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds, which was awarded a Michelin star in October 2015. [2] [3] He also ran The Rabbit in the Moon at the National Football Museum in Manchester.
O'Hare began cooking whilst at university before becoming a professional chef, gaining experience at various restaurants including John Burton-Race at The Landmark and Noma.
O'Hare was born in Middlesbrough England. He describes Redcar, North Yorkshire, as his home town. [1] From the age of 11 to 18 he studied classical and modern ballet. [4] He briefly studied aerospace engineering at Kingston University, London, deciding to leave the course after a few months. [5] [6] In his early twenties, he worked in a call centre in Thornaby-on-Tees for energy company nPower.
It was during his time at university at the age of 19 that O'Hare began cooking: "I just liked going to the supermarket. I wasn't making sauces and all that. Just buying a bit of fish and grilling it." [4]
Instead of attending catering college, he decided to begin his cooking career learning within professional kitchens, with his first job at Judges in Yarm. [7] Other restaurants where he worked include Seaham Hall, working for John Burton-Race at The Landmark and Noma before becoming head chef at The Blind Swine in York. [5] [7] [4] [6]
In 2014, O'Hare opened his restaurant with the backing of Stephen Baylis, The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds, where he was chef-patron. [8]
He has gained a reputation for creative and often unusual dishes. These include chocolate pudding with potato foam, raw prawn tails with cooked prawn brains and a dessert with baked potato custard. [4] [9] In 2015, O'Hare took part in BBC2's The Great British Menu where he made a dish entitled 'Emancipation' – a fish dish inspired by fish and chips served on a canvas. [10] [11]
GG Hospitality In 2016, O'Hare became Creative Director of GG Hospitality, a company created by ex-professional footballers Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville. [12] The company, along with O'Hare, opened a 'space-age Asian' restaurant called The Rabbit in the Moon at the National Football Museum in Manchester on 3 January 2017. [13] [14] O'Hare was also due to set up a fine dining restaurant – The Man Who Fell To Earth, and a less formal restaurant called Are Friends Electric within a new Manchester hotel at the Manchester Stock Exchange owned by GG Hospitality, but these did not open. In October 2023, O'Hare closed The Man Behind the Curtain, and opened a new restaurant called Psycho Sandbar in early 2024, this closed on the 3rd of October 2024 with O'Hare saying that the sudden closure of the restaurant was “reflective of the changing experience market we all live in”. O'Hare competed in BBC2's The Great British Menu in 2015. In 2016, he appeared on BBC's Masterchef . [9] He also made guest appearances on BBC's Saturday Kitchen [19] and on Yes Chef in 2016 on BBC One. [20] In 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023 and 2024 he returned to The Great British Menu as a judge. [21] [22]
O'Hare has one child. [23] O'Hare has become well known for his individual personal style. He became instantly recognisable with his 'rockstar hair' after his appearance on The Great British Menu and says “I know for a fact there could have been TV shows off the back of that haircut.” [10] [24] He is a qualified pilot, gaining his licence in Daytona a few years after leaving university. Conrad Gallagher is an Irish-born chef/restaurateur from Letterkenny, County Donegal, based in Dubai since 2016. He was the youngest chef ever awarded a Michelin star at the time, for Peacock Alley in Dublin, at the age of 26 in 1998. In a career that has attracted both accolades and controversy, Gallagher has owned restaurants in Dublin, New York, London, Las Vegas and Cape Town, and has featured in two reality television cooking series. He opened restaurant consultancy Food Concepts 360 in 2018. Gallagher also owns chef recruitment agency The Chefs Connection and opened The Chefs Playground in Johannesburg, South Africa, in April 2020 as a culinary training centre and specialist shop for chefs’ apparel and equipment. In February 2021, Gallagher opened "Off the Menu Food Emporium", a delicatessen, coffee and wine shop serving tapas-style meals, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He also opened Bistro Vin de Boeuf, in St Francis Bay.
The Box Tree is a restaurant located in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Yorkshire businessman Adam Frontal and the current executive chef Brayden Davies, who has worked at multiple Michelin star restaurants, has led the kitchen since early 2023, offers a new tasting menu on a monthly basis. The Box Tree was previously operated by chef Simon Gueller and his wife, Rena, from 2005 to late 2022. Under their management the restaurant had been redecorated, although elements from the original owners of the restaurant remained. Reception by food critics has improved over the years; the restaurant held a single Michelin star until 2019 and three AA rosettes. A sister company is also run by the chef, called Box Tree Events.

Daniel Clifford is an English chef who is best known for his work at the two Michelin star restaurant Midsummer House. He was also named one of the winners of the 2012 and 2013 series of the BBC television show the Great British Menu. He was chef patron of a gastro pub in Little Dunmow, Essex, named The Flitch of Bacon, which held one Michelin star from 2018 to 2021. Daniel is married to his wife Alice and has five daughters and two stepsons.

In 2015 he was awarded a Michelin star for his own restaurant House of Tides in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Hotel Football is an upscale football-themed hotel overlooking Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United F.C., in Trafford, England. It is owned by former players Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Gary Neville, as well as the GG Hospitality Management Company. The hotel was built at a cost of £24 million and features 133 rooms, a restaurant called Cafe Football and a five-a-side football pitch on the roof. It opened in March 2015.
The Man Behind The Curtain was a restaurant in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, which was opened in 2014 by chef Michael O'Hare, before closing in 2023. The restaurant had a reputation for modern and often unusual food, with modern and artistic presentation. It was awarded a Michelin star in October 2015, and three AA Rosettes in 2016, following in the footsteps of three other Leeds restaurants to hold a Michelin star: Pool Court on the Calls (1996–2005); Rascasse on Water Lane (1997–2000); and Guellar (2002).

Paul Ainsworth is an English chef from Southampton, England. He is chef-patron at Paul Ainsworth at Number 6 in Padstow, Cornwall which was awarded a Michelin star in 2013 and has four AA Rosettes. After studying at catering college, Ainsworth worked for Gary Rhodes, Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing.
The Black Swan is a restaurant with rooms at Oldstead, in North Yorkshire, England which provides food, drink and accommodation. Its restaurant, run by chef Tommy Banks, has been awarded a Michelin Star and Four AA Rosettes. It was rated the best restaurant in the world in 2017 by TripAdvisor.
Tom Aikens, also named Tom Aitkens, is an English Michelin-starred chef. Aikens briefly worked for chefs in London and Paris restaurants. Under his tenure from 1996 to 1999 as head chef and then chef patron, Pied à Terre earned its two Michelin stars in January 1997.
