The Middlesbrough Trophy (or JD Sports Cup for sponsorship reasons) was an invitational football tournament held at the Riverside, Middlesbrough. The only edition took place between 1 and 2 August 1998. It was contested by four teams.

During the 2003–04 season, Middlesbrough participated in the FA Premier League.

The 2009–10 season was the first time Newcastle United Football Club had played in the Championship following relegation after 16 consecutive years in the Premier League. In the 2009–10 season, they won promotion back to the top division after finishing in first place in the 2009–10 Championship.

In the 1998–99 season, Newcastle United competed in the FA Premier League. Newcastle's season was an almost carbon copy of the one before. They finished 13th in the Premiership and lost in the FA Cup final to enter Europe because the winning side had already qualified for the Champions League.
