The Social Democratic Party is the largest political party in Romania. It is also the largest social democratic political party in the country. It was founded by Ion Iliescu,Romania's first democratically elected president at the 1990 Romanian general election. It is currently part of the National Coalition for Romania (CNR),which is a big tent grand coalition comprising also the National Liberal Party (PNL). The CNR formerly included the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR/RMDSZ) until mid June 2023.
The National Liberal Party is a Christian-democratic and socially conservative political party in Romania. Re-founded in mid January 1990,shortly after the Revolution of 1989 which culminated in the fall of communism in Romania,it claims the legacy of the major political party of the same name,active between 1875 and 1947 in the Kingdom of Romania. Based on this historical legacy,it often presents itself as the first formally constituted political party in the country and the oldest of its kind from the family of European liberal parties as well.
Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu is a Romanian historian,politician who served as Prime Minister of Romania in 2012. He was the foreign minister of Romania from 28 December 2004 to 12 March 2007,and he was appointed as Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service later in 2007. Following the resignation of the Emil Boc government he was appointed Prime Minister serving through April 2012 when his cabinet was dismissed following a parliamentary vote of no-confidence. He was confirmed by the Parliament for a second term as Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service,after President Klaus Iohannis nominated him in June 2015 but he resigned in September 2016,citing health issues.
The Székely Land (Szeklerland) is a historic and ethnographic region in Eastern Transylvania,in the center of Romania. The primary goal for the Hungarian political organisations in Romania is to achieve Székely autonomy. The Szeklers make up about half of the Hungarians in Romania and live in a compact ethnic bloc. According to official data from Romania's 2011 census,609,033 persons in Mureș,Harghita,and Covasna counties consider themselves Hungarian. The Székelys (Szeklers),a Hungarian sub-group,are mainly concentrated in these three counties.
Gabriel Oprea is a Romanian politician and a general in the army reserves. The former president of the National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR) and a former member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) who is now an independent,he was a member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies for Ilfov County from 2004 to 2012 and was a Senator for Bucharest from 2012 to 2016.
Ilie Sârbu is a Romanian theologian,economist and politician. A member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD),he sat in the Romanian Senate from 2004 to 2015,representing TimișCounty. In the Adrian Năstase cabinet,he was Agriculture Minister from 2000 until July 2004,and he held the same position in the Emil Boc cabinet between 2008 and 2009. He was Senate President for six weeks in 2008.
Victor Viorel Ponta is a Romanian jurist and politician,who served as Prime Minister of Romania between his appointment by President Traian Băsescu in May 2012 and his resignation in November 2015. A former member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and its leader from 2010 to 2015,he was also joint leader (2012–2014) of the then-governing Social Liberal Union (USL),an alliance with the National Liberal Party (PNL). Ponta was a member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies for Gorj County from 2004 to 2020. In the Emil Boc cabinet,he was Minister-Delegate for Relations with Parliament from 2008 to 2009.
Vasilica Viorica Dăncilă is a Romanian politician,former leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD),and was Prime Minister of Romania from 29 January 2018 to 4 November 2019. She is the first woman in Romanian history to hold both the office of Prime Minister and that of president of the PSD. In 2014,she was elected to a second term as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP),representing the PSD. She was also president of the Social Democratic Women's Organization (OFSD) between 2015 and 2018.
Lia Olguţa Vasilescu is a Romanian politician,member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). She served as mayor of Craiova from 2012 to 2017,when she resigned to become Minister of Labor. She was reelected as Mayor of Craiova in 2020 and since then she has been serving as the mayor of Craiova.
Sorin Mihai Grindeanu is a Romanian politician who served as Prime Minister of Romania from January to June 2017 when he was removed by a motion of no confidence adopted by the Parliament. He served as ad interim President of the Chamber of Deputies in November 2021. He currently serves as Deputy Prime Minister of Romania since 25 November 2021 as a part of the CiucăCabinet,along with Hunor Kelemen.
Parliamentary elections were held in Romania on 6 December 2020 to elect the 136 members of the Senate and the 330 constituent members of the Chamber of Deputies.
There were numerous protests against the Romanian Government between 2017 and 2019. In January 2017,days after the government of the Grindeanu Cabinet was sworn into office in Romania,protests took place throughout the country against ordinance bills that were proposed by the Romanian Ministry of Justice regarding the pardoning of certain committed crimes,and the amendment of the Penal Code of Romania. At the heart of these protests is the community Corruption Kills,founded by Florin Bădiță,who alongside other civic groups organized what proved to be the largest protests since 1989,thus realizing the "Revolution of our generation".
Mihai Tudose is a Romanian politician,deputy in the Parliament of Romania,a former Minister of Economy in 2017 and a former Prime Minister of Romania in 2018. On 16 January,2018 he resigned from his position as Prime Minister after his own Social Democratic Party (PSD) retracted its political support for his government. He subsequently switched from PSD to Victor Ponta's party PRO Romania in 2019.

Ion-Marcel Ciolacu is a Romanian politician who currently serves as the Prime Minister of Romania. He is also the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). As a previously little-known politician outside of Buzău County,where he owns a pastry shop and a consulting firm,Ciolacu came into national prominence when he became the deputy prime minister in 2018 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mihai Tudose. Allegedly,he was given this office in order to report Tudose's activities to Liviu Dragnea,who had been unable to become prime minister himself and was wary of Tudose becoming a power player in the party. Ciolacu soon broke with Dragnea and became an ally of Tudose against Dragnea's leadership. After Tudose's resignation,Ciolacu was marginalized within PSD but still retained the leadership of PSD Buzău. Ciolacu once again returned to prominence in 2019 after Liviu Dragnea had been convicted on abuse of office and incitement to intellectual forgery charges,having to serve a 3 years,6 months sentence. With the Social Democrats still controlling a majority both in the Chamber and in the Senate,Ciolacu won the position of President of the Chamber of Deputies,with 172 votes for and 120 against,previously held by Dragnea himself.

Local elections were held in Romania on 9 June 2024. They were the eighth post-1989 local elections in the country. The previous Romanian local elections in 2020 were won by the National Liberal Party (PNL),even though the Social Democratic Party (PSD) came in with significantly more County Council Presidents and mayors than the National Liberals.
The National Coalition for Romania,initially referred to as the Coalition for Resilience,Development and Prosperity,is a big tent grand coalition in Romania,which includes the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the National Liberal Party (PNL). In addition,this grand coalition supports the presidency of Klaus Iohannis. The CNR also included the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR/RMDSZ) until its withdrawal from the coalition in June 2023.
Lucian N. Romașcanu is a Romanian politician serving as Minister of Culture from 2021 to 2023. A member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD),he has been Senator for Buzău since 2016. He previously served as Culture Minister from 2017 to 2018.
