Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences (MAMK) was a university of applied sciences in the region of Southern Savonia in Finland, located in Mikkeli and Savonlinna. It was established in 1992 and ceased to operate at the end of 2016 when it merged with Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences to form South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK). Southern Finland was a province of Finland from 1997 to 2009. It bordered the provinces of Western Finland and Eastern Finland. It also bordered the Gulf of Finland and Russia.

Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT, better known by the abbreviation LUT University is a Finnish public research university which was established in 1969. The university's Lappeenranta campus is situated on the shore of lake Saimaa – the 4th largest lake in Europe. LUT University's second campus is in the Finnish city of Lahti. The university also has research units in the Finnish cities of Mikkeli and Kouvola, as well as a regional office in Brussels, Belgium.

The population density is 10.87 inhabitants per square kilometre (28.2/sq mi). Neighbour municipalities are Hankasalmi, Joroinen, Juva, Kangasniemi, Leppävirta, Mikkeli, Rautalampi and Suonenjoki.
Urheilupuisto is a multi-use stadium in Mikkeli, Finland. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 4,000 people.

HAMK offers several dozen bachelor's degree programmes and several master's degree programmes (YAMK) in the fields of bioeconomy, business, design, education, health and technology. HAMK also offers education in English.
Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences (KyAMK) was a university of applied sciences located in Kotka, in the region of Kymenlaakso in Finland. Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences was established in 1996, and ceased to operate at the end of 2016, when it merged with Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences to form South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk).

Otava is a major village in Mikkeli, Eastern Finland. With the population of 2000 it is the largest urban area in the surrounding areas of Mikkeli. In 1889, one of the main railways in Finland, the Savonia railway, and a sidetrack to Otava harbour were built through Otava, although trains do not stop there anymore. Also, highway 5 goes by the village.
South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences is a University of Applied Sciences in Finland. It was established in the beginning of 2017, when Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences (Kyamk) and Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences (Mamk) merged. Xamk is the 4th largest university of applied sciences in Finland with 11 458 students and 897 staff members across four campuses. Xamk is jointly owned by the cities of Mikkeli, Kotka, Savonlinna and Kouvola with Mikkeli holding a majority stake (52%) since August 2019.
Visulahti is a dinosaur themed amusement park and tourist center opened in 1980 in Mikkeli, Finland, along the Lake Saimaa and the Kuopio Highway. It is similar to Tervakoski's Puuhamaa as there are no traditional amusement park equipment. It consists of three areas: Dinosauria, HyperDino and Visulahti Wax Cabinet. The Dinosauria has two different swimming pools and three large water slides. Visulahti also has accommodation and a camping site. Visulahti is owned by the Spanish Aspro Ocio S.A. through Puuharyhmä Oyj, which it acquired in 2007.
