Mims Hackett Jr. (born September 28,1941) is an American Democratic Party politician,who served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2002 to 2007,where he represented the 27th Legislative District,which covers the western portion of Essex County.
He was born on September 28,1941,in Birmingham,Alabama. Hackett received a B.S. in 1963 from Paul Quinn College in biology and physical science and received an M.S. in 1976 from Seton Hall University in administration and supervision. [1] [2]
Hackett served in the Assembly on the State Government Committee (as Chair),the Appropriations Committee and the Military and Veterans' Affairs Committee. [1]
Hackett served as the Mayor of Orange,New Jersey from 1996 to 2008. He served on its City Council from 1988 to 1996. [1] He spent thirty-two years as a science teacher in the Union City Board of Education.
Hackett was arrested by the FBI on September 6,2007,in a Federal corruption probe that also included the arrests of Assemblymen Alfred E. Steele and Passaic Mayor Samuel Rivera. [3] The indictment alleges that Hackett accepted $5,000 in bribes for his efforts to steer insurance business from the City of Orange,with an additional $25,000 to be accepted if the firm received the insurance business it sought. [4] On September 7,2007,Governor of New Jersey Jon Corzine called on both Hackett and Steele to resign from their seats in the New Jersey Legislature. [5]
Hackett submitted his letter of resignation from his Assembly seat on September 10,2007;Steele followed with a resignation submitted that same day. [6] In resigning before September 17,2007,the Democratic Party was able to put an alternate on the November ballot in lieu of Hackett. [7] He resigned as mayor of Orange on May 27,2008. [8]
Hackett was convicted on a charge of falsifying expense receipts and was sentenced to a five-year prison term beginning in January 2009. In December of that year,he was accepted into a state early-release program and was allowed to return home. [9]
He currently resides in Orange.

A member of the Democratic Party,he served in the New Jersey Senate from 1982 to 2024 and as the President of the Senate from 2002 to 2010. He represented the 27th Legislative District,which covered the western portions of Essex County and the southeastern portion of Morris County.

Alfred E. Steele is an American Baptist clergyman and Democratic Party politician,who served in the New Jersey General Assembly starting in 1996,where he represented the 35th legislative district. He resigned on September 10,2007,in the wake of his arrest the previous week on corruption charges.

John F. McKeon is an American Democratic Party politician who represents the 27th Legislative District in the New Jersey Senate,which primarily covers the western portion of Essex County. McKeon previously served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2002 to 2024,where he was Assistant Majority Whip (2004–05),Assistant Majority Leader (2006–07),Majority Whip (2008–09),Deputy Speaker (2010–11) and was the Parliamentarian from 2022-24. He is also a former mayor of West Orange.
Anthony Chiappone is an American Democratic Party politician who served in the New Jersey General Assembly,where he represented the 31st Legislative District from 2004 to 2006 and again from 2008 until his resignation in 2010.
Joseph Vas is an American Democratic Party politician,who has served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2004 to 2010,where he represented the 19th Legislative District. He did not seek re-election to the assembly in 2009. He also served as Mayor of Perth Amboy,New Jersey from 1990 to 2008. He was defeated for re-election to a 5th full term by local bank vice president Wilda Diaz in 2008 by a 58% to 42% margin. He was elected Perth Amboy Democratic Chairman in 2008,succeeding his longtime campaign chairman Ray Geneske. Vas resigned as the party chairman in 2009. He was convicted of state corruption charges in 2010 and federal corruption charges in 2011.

Epps was elected to the Assembly on November 8,2005,filling the seat of fellow Democrat Anthony Chiappone,who lost in the primary in his bid for re-election.
Leonard Harvey Smith is an American Democratic Party politician who has served in the New Jersey General Assembly from January 8,2008 to January 10,2010,where he represented the 31st legislative district. He is the former Acting Mayor of Jersey City,New Jersey and previously served in the New Jersey Senate. He did not seek re-election in 2009.
Scott T. Rumana is an Assyrian-American Republican Party politician,and was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly,where he represented the 40th legislative district from January 8,2008 until his resignation on October 20,2016. On October 20,2016,he was confirmed by the New Jersey Senate as a judge of the New Jersey Superior Court for Passaic County. He has also served as the mayor and as a councilman in Wayne and is a former member of the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Samuel Rivera was an American politician,the Democratic mayor of the U.S. city of Passaic,New Jersey,from 2001 until 2008. Rivera came to national attention on September 6,2007,when he was indicted and arrested on charges of accepting bribes in exchange for agreeing to direct municipal contracts to an insurance broker acting as a cooperating witness. Rivera pleaded guilty to attempted extortion,stepped down as mayor,and was sentenced to 21 months in prison. He was succeeded in office by Gary Schaer.

A general election was held in the U.S. state of New Jersey on November 3,2009. Primary elections were held on June 2. Most state positions were up in this election cycle,which includes all 80 seats in the New Jersey General Assembly,as well as Governor and Lieutenant Governor. In addition to the State Legislative elections,numerous county offices and freeholders in addition to municipal offices were up for election. There was one statewide ballot question. Some counties and municipalities may have had local ballot questions as well. Non-partisan local elections,some school board elections,and some fire district elections also happened throughout the year.
Afterward, Mr. Hackett, who resigned as mayor effective 8 a.m. Tuesday, declined to comment.
