Alfred E. Steele (born January 22,1954) is an American Baptist clergyman and Democratic Party politician,who served in the New Jersey General Assembly starting in 1996,where he represented the 35th legislative district. He resigned on September 10,2007,in the wake of his arrest the previous week on corruption charges.
He had been the Assembly's Deputy Speaker since 2002 and was the Assistant Minority Leader from 1998 to 2001. In the Assembly,Steele served as Vice Chair of the Regulatory Oversight Committee,and also serves on the Budget Committee and the Law and Public Safety Committee. [1] In the past,he had served as Chair of the Assembly's State Government Committee and on the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee.
Steele has served as Chaplain in the Passaic County Jail from 1990 to 1994,a position he is currently holding. He also served as Councilman and Council President on the Paterson City Council.
Steele graduated with a Bachelor of Theology from Northeastern Bible College. He is the Pastor of Seminary Baptist Church in Paterson,New Jersey. [1]
Steele was arrested by the FBI on September 6,2007,in a Federal corruption probe that also included the arrests of Assemblyman and Orange mayor Mims Hackett and Passaic Mayor Samuel Rivera. [2] The charges are that Steele accepted $14,000 in bribes to steer insurance brokers new business from Newark,Orange,Passaic and Paterson,where he allegedly boasted that he could secure the business as he "had five votes on the City Council." [3] On September 7,2007,Governor of New Jersey Jon Corzine called on both Steele and Hackett to resign from their seats in the New Jersey Legislature. [4]
Steele submitted his letter of resignation from his Assembly seat on September 10,2007;Hackett filed a resignation letter that same day. [5] In resigning before September 17,2007,the Democratic Party would be able to put an alternate on the November ballot in lieu of Steele. [6]

Richard James Codey is an American politician who served as the 53rd governor of New Jersey from 2004 to 2006. A member of the Democratic Party,he has served in the New Jersey Senate since 1982 and served as the President of the Senate from 2002 to 2010. He represents the 27th Legislative District,which covers the western portions of Essex County and the southeastern portion of Morris County. Codey is the longest-serving state legislator in New Jersey history,having served in the New Jersey Legislature continuously since January 8,1974. He has served as the Deputy Senate President Pro Tem since 2022. In August 2023,Codey announced that he would not seek re-election and would retire from the state senate when his term ends in January 2024,having served for 50 years in the legislature.
Bernard F. Kenny Jr. is an American Democratic Party politician,who represented the 33rd Legislative District in the New Jersey State Senate from 1993 to 2008,after serving in the New Jersey General Assembly from 1988 to 1993. He served for one day at the end of his tenure in the Senate as President of the Senate.
Joseph V. Doria Jr. is an American Democratic Party politician,who served as Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs in the cabinet of Governor Jon Corzine from 2007 until his resignation in July 2009. He is a former Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly,State Senator for the 31st Legislative District,and a former Mayor of Bayonne,a position he held from July 1998 to October 2007.
Henry P. McNamara was an American Republican Party politician,who served in the New Jersey State Senate from 1985 to 2008,where he represented the 40th Legislative District. In the Senate,he was Minority Whip from 1990 to 1991. He was also a member of the Senate Environment Committee and the Transportation Committee.
Loretta Weinberg is an American Democratic Party politician,who served as a member of the New Jersey Senate from 2005-2022,where she represented the 37th Legislative District. She also served as Senate Majority Leader. Weinberg served in the General Assembly before being selected to replace retiring Senator Byron Baer.
Nelida "Nellie" Pou is an American Democratic Party politician who has served in the New Jersey Senate since 2012,representing the 35th Legislative District. She previously represented the 35th district in the General Assembly. When Pou was sworn into the Assembly on January 29,1997,to succeed Bill Pascrell,she became the first woman and the first Hispanic to represent the 35th district.
Walter J. Kavanaugh was an American Republican Party politician,who served in the New Jersey Legislature for 32 years,representing the 16th Legislative District. He died just two days after leaving the State Senate,having declined to run for re-election in 2007. His 32 years of service in the legislature made him the seventh-longest serving legislator in state history.
Elease Evans is an American Democratic Party politician who served in the New Jersey General Assembly from November 2007 until January 2012,representing the 35th legislative district. Evans held a seat that was vacated by former Assemblyman Alfred E. Steele on September 10,2007. She was first sworn into the Assembly on November 9,2007.

He was convicted of state corruption charges in 2010 and federal corruption charges in 2011.

Scott T. Rumana is an Assyrian-American Republican Party politician,and was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly,where he represented the 40th legislative district from January 8,2008 until his resignation on October 20,2016. On October 20,2016,he was confirmed by the New Jersey Senate as a judge of the New Jersey Superior Court for Passaic County. He has also served as the mayor and as a councilman in Wayne and is a former member of the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
