Mohammad Akbar Hossain is a retired lieutenant general in the Bangladesh Army and former commandant of National Defence College. [1]

Career

Akbar Hossain was an artillery officer who was commissioned in the 13th BMA long course on 20 December 1985 from Bangladesh Military Academy.18th Chief of Army Staff general Waker-Uz-Zaman, former director of CTIB lieutenant general S. M. Matiur Rahman and major general Mohammad Humayun Kabir are his coursemates. [2]

Hossain is the former general officer commanding of 9th Infantry Division and commander of Savar area. [3] He previously served as Director General of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence. [4] He also served as Director of Counter Intelligence Bureau of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence. He previously Commanded a Artillery Brigade and a Air Defence Artillery Brigade. Under him a new monogram of DGFI was designed. [5] [6]

In October 2005, Akbar was posted to 2nd Rapid Action Battalion as commanding officer. In February 2007 the battalion surveillance team had spotted a Hummer in Panthapath and asked the owners to come to their camp where they were detained. [7] Assistant director Monayem Hossain of the Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against Harunur Rashid for tax fraud in March 2007 with Tejgaon police station and then pressed charge in July. [8] [9] Harunur Rashid had imported a Hummer H2 on 25 April 2005 without paying tax as per his privilege as a member of parliament but later sold the to Ishtiak Sadek, violating the rules of the duty free facility, who sold it to Enayetur Rahman Bappi. [10] [11] [12] A vehicle imported duty free using such a privilege may not be resold within three years of its importation. [11]

Hossain became the 1st Colonel Commandant of the Remount Veterinary and Farm Corps in December 2020. [13]

Controversies

Lieutenant General Akbar Hossain, has been implicated in serious allegations. In September 2024, a complaint was filed against him with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh, accusing him of involvement in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings during his tenure at DGFI from 2010 to 2018. [14]

The complaint, submitted by Major (Retired) M Sarwar Hossain, a Supreme Court lawyer and former army officer, alleges that Lt. Gen. Hossain detained numerous individuals in secret prisons and supported manipulated elections in 2014 and 2018. These actions are claimed to have undermined democratic processes in Bangladesh. [15]
