Pekan Town is a town in Pekan District,Pahang,Malaysia. It is also the royal capital of the state. Its name comes from a flower,the Bunga Pekan. Pekan is also the name of the district the town is situated in,and a parliamentary constituency in its own right. It is the home of the state's royal family headed by Sultan Abdullah of Pahang. It is also the hometown of the second Prime Minister of Malaysia,Tun Abdul Razak Hussein,and his son,former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Najib is also Pekan's current Member of Parliament.
Bukit Kepong incident was an armed encounter in 1950 during the Malayan Emergency between the Federation of Malaya Police and the guerrillas of the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA),the armed wing of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP). The National Concord was a Malaysian political coalition that was formed between the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) and United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) against the then-ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition which had came into power after the 2018 Malaysian general election (GE14). The political cooperation between the two largest Malay-Muslim-based parties was officialised with the signing of the Piagam Muafakat Nasional. The five-point charter was signed by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the Himpunan Penyatuan Ummah held at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC),Kuala Lumpur on 14 September 2019. Its main aim is to unite the Muslim community or Ummah for electoral purposes.
A by-election was held on 4 July 2020 for the seat of Chini in the Pahang State Legislative Assembly. The seat became vacant following the death of the incumbent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) of Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition,Abu Bakar Harun on 7 May 2020 who had held the seat since 2004. Mohd Sharim Md Zain from BN won the by-election with a 12,650 majority to retain the seat again.
