The Perak State Legislative Assembly (Malay : Dewan Negeri Perak) is the unicameral state legislature of the Malaysian state of Perak. It is composed of 59 members representing single-member constituencies throughout the state. Elections are held no more than five years apart, along with elections to the federal parliament and other state assemblies.

The Assembly convenes at the Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan in the state capital, Ipoh. At 59 seats, it is the largest state assembly among the 11 legislatures of the States of Malaya.

Role

The Perak State Legislative Assembly enacts laws that apply in Perak. It must hold at least three sittings a year and table a budget in March and late October or early November. [2] The Speaker presides over sittings in the Assembly and ensures order during debates. The present Speaker is Mohamad Zahir Abdul Khalid.

The majority party or coalition in the Assembly forms the state government, led by the Menteri Besar. He appoints the state executive council, or EXCO (Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan), drawing from members of the Assembly.

    Dato' Ngeh Koo Ham, also known as James Ngeh, is a Malaysian politician, advocate and solicitor who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Beruas since March 2008. He served as Speaker of the Perak State Legislative Assembly from July 2018 to May 2020, Member of the Perak State Executive Council (EXCO) in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) administration under former Menteri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin from March 2008 to the collapse of the PR administration in February 2009 and Member of the Assembly (MLA) for Sitiawan from March 2004 to May 2018. He is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and formerly PR, Barisan Alternatif (BA) and Gagasan Rakyat (GR) coalitions.     The 14th Perak State election was held on 9 May 2018. The previous state election was held on 5 May 2013. Each of the state assemblymen are elected to a five-year term each.

    The Speaker of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly is the highest-ranking presiding officer in the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, the unicameral legislature of the Malaysian state of Selangor. They are responsible for convening sessions of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, organising debates, and examining the admissibility of petitions, bills, and amendments. In the absence of the Speaker, the deputy will take their place.

The political crisis culminated in a 2022 snap general election and eventual formation of a coalition government.
