Mokpo National University is a public university in Muan and Mokpo, South Korea. The school was founded in 1946 and was named Mokpo Normal School. In 1964, it was changed to Mokpo College of Education. In 1978, it was reorganized into Mokpo Elementary School. In 1979, it was upgraded to a four-year university. In 1990, it was upgraded to Mokpo National University, a comprehensive university. [1] In 2024, family members of the victims of the Jeju Air Flight 2216 accident were temporarily accommodated here. [2]

Jeju National University is one of ten Flagship Korean National Universities. founded in 1952 in Jeju City, the provincial capital of Jeju, South Korea. In 2008 Cheju National University and the Jeju National University of Education merged into Jeju National University. The Naewat-dang shamanic paintings are preserved there.

Jeju National University of Education was the only teacher-training university on South Korea's Jeju Island. It was located in the provincial capital, Jeju City. It merged with Cheju National University and its campus is used as Sara Campus of Cheju National University in 2008. Since then, it is being operated as the Teachers College of Cheju National University now.

Chodang University (Korean: 초당대학교) is the only university in Muan County, a largely rural district of South Korea's South Jeolla province. The current president is Boung-Sik, Kim.

Asiana Airlines Flight 733 was a domestic Asiana Airlines passenger flight from Seoul-Gimpo International Airport to Mokpo Airport, South Korea. The Boeing 737 crashed on 26 July 1993, in the Hwawon area of Haenam County, South Jeolla Province. The cause of the accident was determined to be pilot error leading to controlled flight into terrain. 68 of the 116 passengers and crew on board were killed. The crash resulted in the first hull loss of a 737-500.

Mokpo Air Base is an air base in Yeongam County, South Jeolla Province, South Korea, near Mokpo. In 2006, 16,909 passengers utilized the airport. This airport was closed when the nearby Muan International Airport opened in November 2007.

Muan International Airport is an international airport in Muan County, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. Construction of the airport began in 1997, and the airport opened on 9 November 2007. The airport serves the province of South Jeolla, especially the cities of Gwangju, Mokpo, and Naju. It replaced the nearby Mokpo Airport, and is expected to replace the nearby Gwangju Airport as well. The airport is managed by Korea Airports Corporation and served 543,247 passengers in 2018.

MV <i>Sewol</i> South Korean ferry

MV Sewol was a South Korean vehicle-passenger ferry, built and previously operated in Japan. She operated between Incheon and Jeju. On 16 April 2014, Sewol capsized and sank with the loss of 304 passengers and crew.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jeju Air Flight 2216</span> 2024 aviation accident in South Korea

Jeju Air Flight 2216 was a scheduled international passenger flight operated by Jeju Air from Suvarnabhumi Airport near Bangkok, Thailand, to Muan International Airport in Muan County, South Korea. On 29 December 2024, the Boeing 737-800 operating the flight was approaching Muan, when a bird strike occurred. The pilots issued a mayday alert, performed a go-around, and on the second landing attempt, the landing gear did not deploy and the airplane belly landed well beyond the normal touchdown zone. It overran the runway, colliding with the approach lighting system and crashing into a berm encasing a concrete structure that supported an antenna array for the instrument landing system. The collision killed all 175 passengers and 4 of 6 crew members. The surviving 2 cabin crew were seated in the rear of the plane, which detached from the fuselage, and were rescued with injuries.
