Monroe Central Junior-Senior High school's athletic teams are known as the Golden Bears and compete in the Mid-Eastern Conference. [3] The school offers a wide range of athletics including:

Football

The first official varsity football game played for the Golden Bears was a sectional playoff game against the Tri Titans on October 23, 2009. The 2015-2016 Golden Bears football team went 9-3 and made it to the sectional finals for the first time in school history. [4] Additionally, three players received honorable mention by the AP. [5] In 2016-2017 the Golden Bears went 11-1 undefeated in the regular season for their first time making it to the sectional finals for the second time in school history. In 2017–2018 season the Golden Bears went 12-2 (School Record) which resulted in their first regional and sectional titles. 2018-2019 saw the Golden Bears go 10-3 and repeat as sectional champions. The 2020-2021(Covid Season) Golden Bears saw their first MEC conference championship which led to a 7–2 record having lost once in regular season and in the sectional final to the eventual State Runner Ups South Adams Starfires. The 2021-2022 season saw another undefeated season and MEC championship but a loss in the sectional championship called the "Mud Bowl" featured on ESPN final score was 6–3 in favor of the South Adams Starfires.

The Mid-Eastern Conference is an IHSAA-sanctioned conference in East Central Indiana. The conference formed in 1963 as schools from Delaware, Henry, and Randolph counties banded together with impending consolidations making their conference situations unstable. The conference has never been stable for long, varying between six and eight members between 1963 and 1977, and having as many as ten members since. While schools from Hancock, Madison and Wayne counties have participated, the conference has generally stayed within its original footprint. The league once again grew to ten members as Eastern Hancock and Shenandoah joined.

Blackmon has coached two teams to the class 2A high school basketball championship in Indiana, winning back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009. He also won the class 3A high school basketball championship in Indiana in 2016. Blackmon played basketball in college for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. As a senior at Marion High School, in Marion, Indiana, Blackmon was runner-up for the award of Indiana Mr. Basketball, won that year by Steve Alford. Blackmon was named to the McDonald's All-American and Parade All-American teams in recognition of his high school success.

Washington High School was a public high school in East Chicago, Indiana, which opened in 1898 but closed in 1986. Washington High School merged with Roosevelt High School to become East Chicago Central High School, known in the area as "Central."
