Montgomery Babcock Case (February 11, 1882 — May 7, 1953) was an American civil engineer, bridge builder, and partner of Modjeski and Masters, the oldest bridge engineering firm in the United States. [1] [2] He is associated with the development of 14 bridges. As of 2018, they cumulatively transit over 400 million vehicles per year.
His most notable project, the George Washington Bridge, achieved multiple world records including span length, cofferdam size, and use of deflection; earning the designation "Eighth Wonder of the World." [3] Le Corbusier called it "the most beautiful bridge in the world." [4] As of 2018, it is the busiest motor vehicle bridge on earth, transiting over 1 billion vehicles from 2008-2018. [5] It is also home to the world's largest free-flying American flag and was featured on the History Channel series Modern Marvels.
Case was named after his third great-grandfather, William Montgomery, who was a colonel in the America Revolutionary War. During the New York and New Jersey Campaign, Colonel Montgomery's regiment retreated from Fort Washington across the Hudson River to Fort Lee. One hundred and fifty one years later, Case erected the George Washington Bridge at the same location.
Montgomery Case was born in Monmouth, Illinois, to Lyman and Carrie (née Rice) Case. His uncle, Thomas Munger, was a major influence on his career. [6] From his guidance, Case attended the University of Nebraska from 1902-1904 and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1906 with a bachelor of science in civil engineering. [7] He was a member of Delta Tau Delta. After graduation, he married Maybelle Betsy McConnell (b.1880—d.1945) in 1910 [8] and began working with Ralph Modjeski on the Columbia River Railroad Bridge, followed by several more projects into the early 1920s. Throughout the 1920s he worked with Othmar Ammann. Following the death of Clement E. Chase, who was killed during an inspection of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, Case returned to Modjeski in 1933 and became a full partner alongside Frank M. Masters, forming Modjeski, Masters, and Case. [9] [10] He retired in 1940. [1]
Case also served as an advisor to the War Manpower Commission, [1] chief construction engineer for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, [11] and regularly lectured at Princeton University. [12] He was a member of American Society of Civil Engineers and American Railway Bridge and Building Association.
Othmar Hermann Ammann was a Swiss-American civil engineer whose bridge designs include the George Washington Bridge, Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, and Bayonne Bridge. He also directed the planning and construction of the Lincoln Tunnel.

The Bayonne Bridge is an arch bridge that spans the Kill Van Kull between Staten Island, New York and Bayonne, New Jersey. It carries New York State Route 440 and New Jersey Route 440, with the two roads connecting at the state border at the river’s center. It has the sixth-longest steel arch mainspan in the world, the longest in the world at the time of its completion. The Newburgh–Beacon Bridge is a continuous truss toll bridge that spans the Hudson River in New York State. The bridge carries Interstate 84 (I-84) and New York State Route 52 (NY 52) between Newburgh and Beacon and consists of two separate spans. The original northern span, which now carries westbound traffic, was opened on November 2, 1963, as a two-lane bridge. A second span, completed in 1980, now carries all eastbound traffic. The span provides connections to the New York State Thruway (I-87) and U.S. Route 9W (US 9W) in Newburgh and US 9 in Fishkill. The bridges includes a 2,204-foot-long (672 m) cantilever span, with a main span of 1,000 feet (300 m) and side spans of 602 feet (183 m). The total length of all spans and approaches is 7,855 feet (2,394 m) for the north span and 7,789 feet (2,374 m) for the south span. The bridges, owned by the New York State Bridge Authority, carry six lanes of traffic and approximately 65,000 vehicles per day. The bridge is officially known as the Hamilton Fish Newburgh–Beacon Bridge.
The Bear Mountain Bridge, ceremonially named the Purple Heart Veterans Memorial Bridge, is a toll suspension bridge in New York State. It carries US 6 and US 202 across the Hudson River between Bear Mountain State Park in Orange County and Cortlandt in Westchester County. At completion in 1924 it was the longest suspension bridge in the world until this record was surpassed 19 months later by the Benjamin Franklin Bridge between Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey. Like the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City, the approach spans of the Bear Mountain Bridge are unsuspended; only its main span is suspended by cables.

The Harahan Bridge is a cantilevered through truss bridge that carries two rail lines and a pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi River between West Memphis, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee. The bridge is owned and operated by Union Pacific Railroad and is the second longest pedestrian/bicycle bridge in the United States. It was built with roadways cantilevered off the sides of the main structure for vehicles. These roadways are owned by the cities of Memphis, Tennessee, and Crittenden County, Arkansas, and were used from 1917–1949, until the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge opened 400 feet (120 m) south of the Harahan. The bridge was named in honor of railroad executive James Theodore Harahan, former president of the Illinois Central Railroad, who was killed in a railroad accident during the construction of the bridge. In February 2011, Union Pacific Railroad officials agreed to the idea of converting the 1917 roadways into a bicycle-pedestrian walkway across the river. In June 2012, Memphis was awarded a $14.9 million federal grant to build the walkway. The overall project was expected to cost $30 million, of which about $11 million was used for the Harahan Bridge portion. Construction was completed in 2016.

The 178th and 179th Street Tunnels are two disused vehicular tunnels in Upper Manhattan in New York City.
