Morley Field Sports Complex is a sports complex in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. [1] The sports complex was named after John Morley, who served as a park superintendent in Balboa Park from 1911 to 1939. [2]

Athletic facilities

Archery

An archery range is located in the sports complex. [3] San Diego Archers runs events at the range. [4]

Baseball, Softball, & Tee-ball

The sports complex offers multi-purpose ballfields, used for baseball, softball and Tee-ball. [3]

Cross country

The Morley Field cross country running course is a 1.5-mile/5000 meter cross country course in the Morley Field Sports Complex. [5] The Foot Locker Cross Country Championships are held on the cross country course. The San Diego State Aztecs women's cross country team and the San Diego High School Cavers cross country teams hosts meets at the course. [6] [7]

Cycling

The San Diego Velodrome is a banked 333.3-meter (0.2 mile) oval track cycling race track constructed in 1976. The track has 28-degree banked corners. [3] [8]

Disc golf

A disc golf course is located in the sports complex. [9]

Golf

The Balboa Park Golf Complex contains a public 18-hole golf course and 9-hole executive course. [10]

Lawn Bowling

There are two separate facilities dedicated to lawn bowling: one each for bocce (Italian lawn bowling) and pétanque (French lawn bowling). [3] The bocce courts are located at the northeast portion of the sports complex. The Petanquedrome sits next to the east side of Bud Kearns Memorial Pool. [11] [12]

Swimming & water polo

The Bud Kearns Memorial Pool is located in the sports complex. [13] The pool has 12 swimming lanes at a length of 44 yards and is "ideal for water polo." [14]

Tennis

Maureen Connolly Brinker Stadium, a 1,500 seat tennis stadium dedicated on April 25, 1971 to beloved local tennis legend Maureen Connolly, anchors the Balboa Tennis Club, which includes 24 additional hard courts and other amenities. [15] [16]

Maureen Catherine Connolly-Brinker, known as "Little Mo", was an American tennis player, the winner of nine major singles titles in the early 1950s. In 1953, she became the first woman to win a Grand Slam. She is also the only player in history to win a title without losing a set at all four major championships. The following year, in July 1954, a horseback riding accident seriously injured her right leg and ended her competitive tennis career at age 19. She died of ovarian cancer at the age of 34.

The Eastbay-Foot Locker Cross Country Championships are a series of annual cross country running races held in various regions of the United States to determine the premier cross country runner in various age groups, but mainly serves to find the best prep cross country athlete in the country. The event began in 1979 by the F. W. Woolworth Company, which initially branded it as the Kinney Cross Country Championships, at the Morley Field Sports Complex in Balboa Park, San Diego, California before Woolworth rebranded the event in 1993 to the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships for Woolworth's sporting goods company. For most people associated with the sport, the name was just shortened to Foot Locker or even abbreviated in agate results as FL. In 2021 the event was rebranded again as the Eastbay Cross Country Championships after the Foot Locker owned company. The event is the longest-running national cross country race for high school students.

The San Diego Velodrome is a 333m outdoor bicycle racing track located in the Morley Field Sports Complex in San Diego, California. Constructed in 1975 and resurfaced in 2010, it is owned by San Diego Parks and Recreation. Currently operated by the San Diego Velodrome Association, the track hosts regular races sanctioned by Cycling USA and training nights. In 2007, the track hosted the USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships.
