Moss Park Armoury is a Canadian Forces facility located at 130 Queen Street East in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is at the northeast corner of Jarvis Street and Queen Street East, in the neighbourhood of Moss Park. It currently hosts several units of the Primary Reserve. More than 600 soldiers and reservists train at Moss Park every week. [1]
It is located close to the downtown core and financial district, as well as several post-secondary institutions including the University of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University, and George Brown College. The Armoury is within a short walking distance of the Queen subway station. It is also accessible by the 501 Queen and 502 Downtowner streetcar routes. As a prominent military structure in downtown Toronto, it has been the site of a number of anti-war protests. [2]
Moss Park Armoury was constructed in the mid-1960s to house several of the regiments displaced by the demolition of the old Toronto Armories on University Avenue. It cost CA$2.1 million to construct. In the spring and fall of 2010, the armoury was renovated and the facade was replaced. [3]

The Armoury is also home to the 48th Highlanders of Canada Royal Canadian Army Cadets, a youth program for children aged 12–18. [4]
In December 2017, Toronto City Council and Mayor John Tory rejected a motion to consider using armouries located in the city as homeless shelters. [5] [6] However, following several nights of −20 °C (−4 °F) weather, thousands of residents signed petitions asking the Mayor to reconsider the decision. On January 3, 2018, Mayor Tory asked the Government of Canada to allow city staff to use the Moss Park Armoury as a temporary shelter for the homeless. [7] On January 5, 2018, the request was approved by the Government of Canada. [8]
The 48th Highlanders of Canada is a Canadian Forces Primary Reserve infantry regiment based in Toronto, Ontario, parading out of Moss Park Armoury. The regiment is part of 4th Canadian Division's 32 Canadian Brigade Group.

The Garden District is a neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The name was selected by the Toronto East Downtown Residents Association (TEDRA) in recognition of Allan Gardens, an indoor botanical garden located nearby at the intersection of Carlton and Jarvis Streets. The area known as Moss Park is typically considered to be between Jarvis Street and Parliament Street, south of Dundas Street, an area dominated by public housing projects. According to one set of boundaries of the City of Toronto, it is roughly L-shaped, bounded on the north by Carlton Street to Parliament Street, on the east by Parliament Street to Queen Street East and the Don River, on the south by Eastern Avenue and Front Street, and on the west by Jarvis Street. This larger concept of the area includes the neighbourhoods known as Corktown and the Garden District, as well as a portion of Cabbagetown.

Seaton House is the largest homeless shelter in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 339 George Street in the Garden District neighbourhood. The facility provides temporary lodging, food, clothing, medical care, for single men and also attempts to provide tools for enabling them to establish their independence. The shelter houses up to 700 men though, in the past, it has exceeded capacity and housed as many as 900 men. It is expected to close in 2020.

George Street is a north–south street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from south of Front Street, north to Gerrard Street. Its southern blocks are within the grid of the townsite of the original town of York, Upper Canada. George Street was once one of the most exclusive and expensive addresses in the city. Today, the north end of the street, next to Seaton House men's shelter, is an example of urban blight. The City of Toronto government is redeveloping the street with a new Seaton House institution focused more on long-term care. The Toronto Armories, also known as the University Avenue Armories and the Toronto Drill Hall, was an 1894 armoury building in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was located on University Avenue, just north of Osgoode Hall. It was the largest armoury in the country and trained over 250,000 soldiers to serve Canada in various wars. It was sold in 1961 to the Metropolitan Toronto government for a new courthouse building and demolished in 1963.
The 48th Highlanders of Canada Pipes and Drums is an authorized pipe band in the Canadian Forces and is currently located at Moss Park Armoury in Toronto, Ontario. The current pipe major is Master Warrant Officer Iain Lang, who is concurrently the official piper to the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
