Mount Medina

Mount Medina ( 68°27′S66°15′W / 68.450°S 66.250°W / -68.450; -66.250 Coordinates: 68°27′S66°15′W / 68.450°S 66.250°W / -68.450; -66.250 ) is a prominent ice-covered mountain which rises to 1,845 metres (6,050 ft) from the northeastern part of Hadley Upland and overlooks the head of Gibbs Glacier in southern Graham Land, Antarctica. It was photographed by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in November 1947 (trimetrogon air photography), and was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1958. The mountain was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Pedro de Medina (1493–1567), Spanish Cosmographer Royal, who wrote Arte de Navegar (Valladolid, 1545), an important manual of navigation. A mountain is a large landform that rises above the surrounding land in a limited area, usually in the form of a peak. A mountain is generally steeper than a hill. Mountains are formed through tectonic forces or volcanism. These forces can locally raise the surface of the earth. Mountains erode slowly through the action of rivers, weather conditions, and glaciers. A few mountains are isolated summits, but most occur in huge mountain ranges.

Hadley Upland is a triangular shaped remnant plateau with an undulating surface, 1,500 to 1,900 metres, in southern Graham Land, Antarctica. It is bounded by Windy Valley and Martin Glacier, Gibbs Glacier and Lammers Glacier. The existence of this upland was known to the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, Finn Ronne and Carl R. Eklund having travelled along Lammers and Gibbs Glaciers in January 1941. The upland was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1948–50 and 1958, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after John Hadley, an English mathematician who, at the same time as Thomas Godfrey, independently invented the quadrant, in 1730–31.

The chain was discovered by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition (1957-1958) under Gaston de Gerlache, and named after the ship Belgica, commanded by his father, Lt. Adrien de Gerlache, leader of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897-99. The Prince de Ligne Mountains stand about 10 mi (16 km) north of the Belgica Mountains.

Mount LeMasurier is an ice-free coastal mountain which rises to more than 800 metres (2,600 ft) between Mount Vance and Mount Langway, in the central part of the Ickes Mountains of Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica. The feature was discovered and photographed from aircraft of the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Wesley E. LeMasurier, a geologist with the Marie Byrd Land Survey II, 1967–68. Later, LeMasurier continued research as a faculty member of the geology department at University of Colorado at Denver. In 2018, he is still actively publishing scholarly articles and participating in research projects out of CU Boulder's campus.

Patuxent Ice Stream is a broad Antarctic ice stream between the Patuxent Range and Pecora Escarpment in the Pensacola Mountains, draining northwestward to the upper part of Foundation Ice Stream. Mapped by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy (USN) air photos, 1956-66. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for its proximity to the Patuxent Range.

Arthur Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Arthur Glacier is a valley glacier in Antarctica. It is about 25 nautical miles (50 km) long, and flows west to Sulzberger Ice Shelf between the Swanson Mountains on the north and Mount Rea and Mount Cooper on the south, in the Ford Ranges of Marie Byrd Land. It was discovered by members of West Base of the United States Antarctic Service, in aerial flights and from ground surveys in November–December 1940. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Rear Admiral Arthur C. Davis, a leader in aviation in the U.S. Navy.

Barcus Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Barcus Glacier is a glacier in the Hutton Mountains that drains east-southeast, to the north of Mount Nash and Mount Light, into Keller Inlet in Palmer Land. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from ground surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1961–67, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for James R. Barcus, ionospheric physics researcher at Byrd Station in the summers of 1966–67 and 1967–68.

Mount Ojakangas

Mount Ojakangas is an elongated mountain rising to about 2,450 m, 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) northwest of Mount Washburn in Gromshin Heights in the north part of the Sentinel Range, Ellsworth Mountains. It surmounts Vicha Glacier to the east and Newcomer Glacier to the west.

Mount Waldron mountain in Antarctica

Mount Waldron is a mountain in Antarctica, the summit of Veregava Ridge in the Sentinel Range of Ellsworth Mountains. It is situated 3 nautical miles (6 km) north of Mount Tuck, and surmounts Dater Glacier to the west, Orizari Glacier to the north, Berisad Glacier to the northeast, and Hansen Glacier to the southeast.

Jutulrøra Mountain is a prominent mountain 6 nautical miles (11 km) south of Straumsvola Mountain in the western part of the Sverdrup Mountains, overlooking the east side of Jutulstraumen Glacier in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. It was plotted from air photos by the Third German Antarctic Expedition (1938–39), was remapped from surveys and air photos by the Norwegian–British–Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1949–52) and from air photos by the Norwegian expedition (1958–59), and named Jutulrøra.

Kosco Glacier is a glacier about 20 nautical miles (40 km) long, flowing from the Anderson Heights vicinity of the Bush Mountains of Antarctica northward to enter the Ross Ice Shelf between Wilson Portal and Mount Speed. It was discovered by the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Captain George F. Kosco, U.S. Navy, chief aerologist and chief scientist of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47.

Mount Dewe is a mountain in the southeast part of the Hauberg Mountains in Palmer Land. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from ground surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1961–67, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Michael B. Dewe, a glaciologist at Byrd Station, summer 1965–66.

Freyberg Mountains

The Freyberg Mountains are a group of mountains in Victoria Land, Antarctica, bounded by Rennick Glacier, Bowers Mountains, Black Glacier, and Evans Neve. Named for New Zealand's most famous General, Lord Bernard Freyberg, by the Northern Party of New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE), 1963-64. This mountain group includes the Alamein Range. These topographical features all lie situated on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.

Mount Dudley is a mountain over 1,375 metres (4,510 ft) high, standing at the head of Neny Fjord and bounded on the north and east sides by Neny Glacier, on the west coast of Graham Land. The west side of this mountain was first roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition under John Rymill. It was surveyed in entirety in 1940 by the United States Antarctic Service. The feature was photographed from the air and ground by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) of 1947–48 under Finn Ronne, who named it for Harold M. Dudley, the executive secretary of the American Council of Commercial Laboratories, Inc. in Washington, D.C. who procured various types of equipment and arranged financial aid for RARE.

Gale Ridge is a ridge, 12 nautical miles (22 km) long, extending northwestward from Mount Dover in the Neptune Range of the Pensacola Mountains, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1956–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Phillip L. Gale, a meteorologist at Ellsworth Station, winter 1962.

Goodale Glacier is a glacier which flows north from Mount Goodale and Mount Armstrong along the west side of the Medina Peaks, in the foothills of the Queen Maud Mountains of Antarctica. It was first seen and mapped by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, 1928–30, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in association with Mount Goodale.

Mount Morrison is a mountain 1.5 nautical miles (3 km) northeast of Mount Best, in the Tula Mountains of Enderby Land in Antarctica. It was plotted from air photos taken from Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions aircraft in 1956 and was named by the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia for H.C. Morrison, a member of the crew of the Discovery during the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition of 1929–31.

Mount Havener

Mount Havener is a mountain rising to 2,800 metres (9,200 ft) directly at the head of Guerrero Glacier, in the Doyran Heights of the Sentinel Range, in the Ellsworth Mountains of Antarctica. It was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, from 1957–59, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Melvin C. Havener, a mechanic at South Pole Station in 1957.

Hermes Glacier is a glacier 8 nautical miles (15 km) long, flowing west into Weyerhaeuser Glacier in southern Graham Land, Antarctica. It was surveyed in January 1960 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey who discovered the glacier after several fruitless attempts to find a route out of the mountains east of Earnshaw Glacier. It provided an ideal "road" back to known country and was therefore named after Hermes, the god of roads in Greek mythology. This name by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee initiated the idea of naming other features in this area after Greek gods.

Hinkley Glacier

Hinkley Glacier is a glacier flowing northeastward from Corbet Peak and Schoening Peak, Vinson Massif on the east slope of Sentinel Range in the Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica, and continuing between Mount Segers and Zinsmeister Ridge to enter Dater Glacier southeast of Nebeska Peak and northwest of Sipey Peak. It was named by US-ACAN (2006) after Todd K. Hinkley, Technical Director, National Ice Core Laboratory, U.S. Geological Survey, Denver, CO,2001-06.
