Mount Nittany Medical Center (MNMC), formerly Centre Community Hospital, is a hospital in College Township, Pennsylvania near State College. It is an acute-care facility offering emergency, medical, surgical, diagnostic and community services. The hospital is located adjacent to the Pennsylvania State University main campus near Beaver Stadium. MNMC employs around 2,400 healthcare professionals and support staff, with 60 specialties and subspecialties. [2] The hospital includes a rooftop helipad used by Life Flight. [3]

History

Early years

The Bellefonte Hospital was founded on July 8, 1902 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. In 1924, it was renamed the Centre County Hospital. In 1972, the Mountainview Unit was opened at the current location in State College, and the original location was known as the Willowbank Unit. The Willowbank unit closed in 1978. The hospital was known as Centre Community Hospital until 2003. [4]

Mount Nittany Medical Center

In 2003, the name was changed to Mount Nittany Medical Center. The facility has gone through several renovations and expansions. Some of the notable recent expansions include the addition of a new 52,000 square foot state-of-the-art east wing in 2010 and a brand new comprehensive Cancer Center in 2012. A new 26,000 square foot cardiovascular pavilion opened in 2019 and includes updated cardiac catheterization lab and electrophysiology lab spaces, complete with new imaging and monitoring technology. [5] In 2023, construction started on a 10-story patient tower. [1] MNMC also began pursuing accreditation as a level IV trauma center, with certification expected in 2025. [6] [7]

MNMC was the only hospital with an emergency department in Centre County until Penn Highlands State College opened in 2024. [8]

Mount Nittany Health was established as a system organization in 2011. [4] The organization operates several locations, including a four-story outpatient center that opened in 2024. [9]

Mount Nittany is a founding member of the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute (PSHCI). [10]

The Penn State Cancer Institute is a cancer research center of the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center located in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Nittany Valley is an eroded anticlinal valley located in Centre County, Pennsylvania. It is separated from the Bald Eagle Valley by Bald Eagle Mountain and from Penns Valley by Mount Nittany. The valley is closed to the north by a high plateau that joins these two mountain ridges, but is open to the south at the southern terminus of Mount Nittany. The valley drains to Bald Eagle Creek through water gaps in Bald Eagle Mountain formed by Spring Creek and Fishing Creek, along with smaller streams running through Curtain Gap and Howard Gap. The northwest side of the valley between the Bald Eagle Mountain ridge and the lower Sand Ridge is also known as the Little Nittany Valley.

The organization originally linked three hospitals in DuBois, Brookville, and Clearfield, and grew to nine hospitals in Western and Central Pennsylvania. Penn Highlands also provides services for 26 counties including primary, home, and urgent care.
