Mount Sterling is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and Missouri Route A. The Gasconade River flows past the west side of the town. The Gasconade-Osage county line is approximately one mile west of the community. The county seat of Hermann is 18 miles to the northeast. [1]
A part of the Louisiana Purchase, Mount Sterling was first settled by American pioneers in the 1820s. In 1828, the Gasconade County seat was moved from Bartonville to Mount Sterling due to flooding problems from the Gasconade River in the low-lying town.
In 1843, county residents voted to move the county seat again, this time to the larger city of Hermann, located at the Missouri River. [2]
A post office called Mount Sterling was established in 1843, and remained in operation until 1965. [3] It is unknown why the name "Mount Sterling" was applied to this community. [4]
Gasconade County is a county located in the east-central portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,794. The county seat has been Hermann since 1842. The county was named after the Gasconade River.
Hazelgreen is an unincorporated community in eastern Laclede County, Missouri, United States. It lies along historic U.S. Route 66, now an outer road of Interstate 44. The town is split by I-44, one mile west of the I-44 - Missouri Route 133 junction in adjacent Pulaski County. The Gasconade River is just north and west of the site.

Its location in Township 43, Range 7 West was not identified again until 1998, when a researcher found a notice of sheriff's sale which included a legal description of the "Bartonville tract". Bartonville, a lost town, was situated in what is now Osage County, across the Gasconade River from Cooper Hill.
