Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC, formerly Dabney S. Lancaster Community College) is a public community college in Clifton Forge, Virginia. It is part the Virginia Community College System. [2]
MGCC offers a wide variety of credit programs, including those for transfer and selected occupational, technical and allied health fields. [3]
Non-credit classes, summer camps for youth and special topics seminars are offered throughout the year. The division of Workforce Services and Community Education customizes education and training for the unique needs of current and prospective employers. [4]
The main campus is located in Clifton Forge, Virginia. MGCC also operates the Rockbridge Regional Center on Vista Links Drive in Buena Vista. [5]
In 2022, the college was renamed from Dabney S. Lancaster Community College to Mountain Gateway Community College after a review of names prompted by the Virginia State Board for Community Colleges. The review found that school namesake Dabney S. Lancaster supported segregation and had ties to a white supremacist group. [6] [7]
Clifton Forge is a town in Alleghany County, Virginia, United States which is part of the greater Roanoke Region. The population was 3,555 at the 2020 census. The Jackson River flows through the town, which as a result was once known as Jackson's River Station.

West Clifton Forge was an incorporated town located in Alleghany County, Virginia, United States. In 1906 the towns of Clifton Forge and West Clifton Forge merged to form the independent city of Clifton Forge.
Rappahannock Community College (RCC) is a public community college with two campuses in Virginia, one in Glenns and the other in Warsaw. There are three off-campus sites — one in Kilmarnock, one in King George, one in New Kent County. The institution is one of the twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System. It mostly serves students living on the Middle Peninsula and the Northern Neck, but it also has students from other parts of Virginia. RCC offers associate degrees, certificates, career studies certificates, dual enrollment credit, non-credit programs, lifelong learning credits, and programs for incarcerated students.
Dabney Stewart Lancaster was an American educator and government official. A native of Richmond, Virginia, he attended the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech and went on to serve as Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1941 to 1946, as the president of Longwood College (now Longwood University from 1946 to 1955, and as the first head of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. In 1967, the state honored him by naming its new community college in Clifton Forge after him, and he died in Lexington on March 11, 1975. While Lancaster was previously described as a moderate on racial issues, relative to his contemporaries, advocating for equal pay for white and black teachers, his support of race-based segregation in public schools during his career and the discovery of his involvement with the Anglo-Saxon Clubs of America, a white supremacist organization, prompted state officials to change the name of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College to Mountain Gateway Community College, effective 2022, in the wake of the George Floyd protests.
