Mr. (pronounced Mister; previously known as White Noise) is a Hong Kong pop rock band. They debuted in 2008 under Universal Music Hong Kong [1] with the eponymous EP Mister [2] and have since released nine full-length studio albums. The band comprises of Alan Po (lead vocalist), Ronny Lay (rhythm guitarist), MJ (lead guitarlist), Dash (bass guitarist and backing vocalist), and Tom To (drummer). [3] [4] [5] [6]

History

Mr. debuted with the track "Everyone". They released their debut EP Mister on November 12, 2008. Two other singles were released in support of the EP. The band's lead singer Alan was noted for his vocals being similar to Eason Chan. The band won various year-end awards, including the Group Silver Prize at the 2008 Ultimate Song Chart Awards

On 3 September 2009, the band released their first studio album, If I Am... Singles from the album included "Swing" 搖擺, "If I Were Eason Chan" 如果我是陳奕迅, "Forest", and "Mr. Tam", a duet with Alan Tam. "Swing" topped the Ultimate Song Chart. "If I Were Eason Chan" helped Mr. gain popularity in Hong Kong, topping three music charts and earned multiple year-end awards. At the 2009 Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation, "If I Were Eason Chan" was awarded My Favourite Song (叱吒樂壇我最喜愛的歌曲大獎) [7] and Mr. won My Favorite Group (叱吒樂壇我最喜愛的組合).

The next year Mr. released a remix album titled Like Black. They held their first headlining concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum on 6–7 March 2010, the first band since the legendary Beyond to hold a concert there. [8]

In October 2010, Mr. collaborated with Alan Tam on the album Rolling Power 滾軸力量. The bilingual album consists of 10 Madarin tracks and 10 Cantonese tracks. "Life of John" and "Go" were released as singles in support of the album. [9] [10]

"Tonight Tonight" was released to radio stations in late 2010, topping charts on Metro Radio and 903 Ultimate Song Chart. On 16 May 2011, Mr. released their fourth studio album, People Sing For People. [11] On July 3–4, they headlined their second major concert Everyone Concert 02 at the Hong Kong Coliseum. [12]

In March 2012, Mr. released an eight-track studio album titled Misterdays. The single "Yesterday" 昨天 topped music charts and won various year-end awards.

To promote their upcoming studio album, New Beginning, "What R We Fighting 4", "Sense of Direction" 方向感, "A Love Song" 一首情歌 were released as singles. On 4–5 January 2013, Mr. headlined their third major concert, New Beginning Live at the Hong Kong Coliseum. That same day, their sixth studio album New Beginning was released. [13] The band stayed in Taiwan for ten months to work on their first Mandarin album Fly 飛行的一百個理由. [14] Five singles from the album were released as singles, including the title track "Fly", "Love and Peace", "Wake Up", and "Merry Christmas To You : )". Fly was released on 25 March 2014.

In 2015, disputes between the band and Universal Music, and among the members themselves led to them not renewing their record contract with Universal, which ended in June 2016. [15] The albums We R Mr. Vol. 1 and We R Mr. Vol. 2, containing new tracks and greatest hits were released on 13 April 2017. [16] Universal sent the track "Unbending" 不屈 to radio stations. The song peaked at No. 9 on Ultimate Song Chart.

The band reunited in 2019, releasing two new singles and held their 10th anniversary concert Everyone Concert 10 on 16–17 May 2019. [17] [18] [19]

Cantopop Genre of popular music in the Cantonese language

Cantopop or HK-pop is a genre of pop music written in standard Chinese and sung in Cantonese. Cantopop is also used to refer to the cultural context of its production and consumption. The genre began in the 1970s and became associated with Hong Kong popular music from the middle of the decade. Cantopop then reached its height of popularity in the 1980s and 1990s before slowly declining in the 2000s and experiencing a slight revival in the 2010s. The term "Cantopop" itself was coined in 1978 after "Cantorock", a term first used in 1974. In the eighties Cantopop has reached its highest glory with fanbase and concerts from allover the world, especially from Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. This is even more obvious with the influx of songs from Hong Kong movies during the time.

Alan Tam Hong Kong singer

Alan Tam Wing-lun MH is a Hong Kong singer and actor. He played a major role in developing the Cantopop scene in the 1980s as he was known for singing romantic ballads with modern arrangements. From 1983 to 1987, Alan Tam received numerous music awards and won Most Popular Male Artist and IFPI Award for successive four years, which made him the most famous superstar singer of Hong Kong in 1980s. In early 1988, he publicly quit all pop music award ceremonies and put most efforts in searching new direction for Cantopop music.

Jade Kwan Hong Kong singer

Kwan Wai-Man, better known professionally as Jade Kwan Sum-Yin, is a Cantopop singer and philanthropist based in Hong Kong. Originally from Vancouver, she entered the music industry after winning the 1999 New Talent Singing Awards Canada Finals and the Best Potential Newcomer Award at the New Talent Singing Awards International Finals of the same year. She debuted under BMA Records in July 2002 with the album Jade-1, winning multiple best new artist awards and has since released more than 13 albums and extended plays. Kwan is known for her philanthropic work and has been awarded the 2012 Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection and the Hong Kong Volunteer Award in 2011. Shirley Kwan Hong Kong singer and actress

Shirley Kwan, Milo Kwan, Bik Luik Kwan, Kwan Suk'E, or Kwan Suk Yee is an influential Cantopop singer from Hong Kong. Kwan first shot to fame in 1989 with the hit, "Happy Are Those in Love" (難得有情人) and was widely popular throughout the early to mid-1990s. She is noted for her distinct, whispery vocal style and known equally for singing mainstream ballads and more alternative songs.

Tat Ming Pair

Tat Ming Pair (達明一派) is an experimental Cantopop duo formed in Hong Kong in 1985 by composer Tats Lau (劉以達) and vocalist Anthony Wong Yiu-ming (黃耀明). Their blend of Cantopop, synthpop, new wave and electronic dance music with lyrics that reflected contemporary social, political, and literary themes, made them one of the first alternative and most influential bands of the 1980s Hong Kong music scene. The band enjoyed critical and commercial success until a hiatus in 1990. After their breakup, Wong proceeded as a solo artist while Lau went into acting although the duo have reunited several times over the years.

George Lam Hong Kong singer-songwriter, music producer and actor

George Lam Tse-cheung, also known professionally by his surname Lam, is a Hong Kong-based veteran Cantopop singer, singer-songwriter, music producer and actor, with a career that has so far lasted more than four decades. Lam produces most of his own albums, writes many of his own songs, occasionally writes for other artists, and covers other people's songs. Lam has a wide vocal range and is capable of interpreting and performing many different genres of music. He is heavily involved with planning and designing his concerts and his LP/CD covers. He was the one who came up with the first Cantopop rap, "Ah Lam's Diary", and he also pioneered the stringing together of multiple hit Cantopop songs to create a 10-minute long medley which is called "10 Minutes 12 Inches". In 2019, Lam interwove his songs together to put on a musical-like concert, Lamusical.

Vincy Chan Musical artist

Vincy Chan is a Hong Kong-Singaporean Cantopop singer. She began her singing career after winning 1st runner up at the 2005 New Talent Singing Awards and has since been signed with Emperor Entertainment Group. Her best known songs include "Feeling" (感應) and "My Memories are Not My Own" (我的回憶不是我的).

Jason Chan (singer) Musical artist

Jason Chan Pak-Yu is a Hong Kong Canadian singer. He debuted under Sony Music in 2006 and released his debut album First Experience in 2007 and has since released more than 10 albums. He has been dubbed by the Hong Kong media as the music industry's "hidden master" (樂壇隱世高手). Chan has also ventured into film and television, and business, owning two bars in Hong Kong.

Live in the Moment is a concept record, with themes of focusing on the present, and its eight tracks were recorded with a live band. Its release was preceded by the release two singles, "Flight Attendant" 空姐 and "Saying Goodbye to Every Day" 和每天講再見. A third single "Come with the Wind Gone with the Wind" 隨風而來 隨風而去 was released in November. The album was certified gold by the Hong Kong Recording Industry Alliance (HKRIA).
