Muckleshoot Tribal Schools (MTS) is a K-12 school on the Muckleshoot reservation, in unincorporated King County, Washington, with an Auburn postal address. [1] It is affiliated with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). [2] The school is off of Washington State Route 164. [3]
In 1985 the school opened in the tribal community center. At the time it had 45 students. In 2001 it had its first graduating high school class with two students, and its enrollment was 125, with 98% of them being members of the Muckleshoot tribe. [4] In 2009 its current facility opened. [5] Its expected capacity was 500-600. [4] The current facility has 107,000 square feet (9,900 m2) of building area. [3]
The Muckleshoot are a Lushootseed-speaking Native American tribe, part of the Coast Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest. They are descendants of the Duwamish peoples whose traditional territory was located along the Green and White rivers, including up to the headwaters in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, in present-day Washington State. Since the mid-19th century, their reservation is located in the area of Auburn, Washington, about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Tacoma and 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Seattle.

Southern Lushootseed, also called Twulshootseed or Whulshootseed in the Muckleshoot and Snoqualmie dialects, is the southern dialect of Lushootseed, a Coast Salish language in western Washington State. It was historically spoken by the Muckleshoot, Puyallup, Suquamish, Duwamish, Nisqually, and Squaxin Island tribes. The last native speaker was Ellen Williams (1923–2016) and her death rendered the language extinct.

The school is a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools, an organization whose guiding principles are intended to bolster student achievement. The mascot of Thomas Jefferson is the Raiders. A rebuilding of the school started in winter 2020, the new campus opened in the fall of 2021.
