Muhammad Qasim bin Abdul Karim [2] (born 5 July 1976), is a Pakistani Islamic figure who is claimed by some in Pakistan and Southeast Asia to be the Mahdi. [3] [4] He denies these claims, [5] stating that he never proclaimed himself to be the Mahdi. [6]

Biography

Muhammad Qasim ibn Abd al-Karim was born on 5 July 1976 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, into a purported Sayyid Quraysh (Qureshi) family. His height is 173 cm. [7] From early childhood, Qasim mother claims he was inclined toward religious practices and recalls playing with toys bearing the names of Allah and Muhammad.

Beginning at the age of 17, Qasim says he started experiencing dreams that featured God (in a veil) and Last Prophet Muhammad. He has reported over 800 dreams “in veil” about Allah and over 500 involving Muhammad. [8] He began sharing these dreams publicly in 2014, stating that he is only sharing them as instructed by Allah and Muhammad PBUH in dreams. Initially, they received little attention but later garnered a small following in parts of Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Greece, France, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada and other European countries. [9]

Teachings and messages

He focuses on warning Muslims about the dangers of shirk (polytheism) and emphasizes the oneness of Allah. He states that one of his primary goals is to end shirk and its modern forms worldwide and unite Muslims under a pure form of monotheistic worship, restoring the Muslim community’s honor and power.

His claimed dreams also include prophecies of eschatological events such as a major conflict between India and Pakistan, the downfall of Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and an eventual World War III scenario. [10]

Denial of Mahdi Claims

Although supporters in Pakistan, Indonesia, and Malaysia regard him as the Mahdi, [11] Qasim has repeatedly stated that he does not claim to be the Mahdi. In a statement on his website titled "No Claims of Imam Mahdi or Scholar," he again clarified his position. [12]

In July 2024, MalaysiaGazette issued an official apology and retraction indicating that prior reporting mischaracterized Qasim’s stance; according to the statement, “He never claimed to be the Mahdi.” [13] After his arrest and subsequent legal proceedings, Malaysian outlets again apologized for incorrectly stating that he claimed to be the Mahdi. [14]

In January 2022, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department reportedly took strict action against local Muslims participating in Qasim’s teachings. [15] According to Malaysian news outlets, he was arrested in July 2024 for teaching without a license but was later released following legal proceedings. [16] After his arrest and subsequent legal proceedings, Malaysian outlets again apologized for incorrectly stating that he claimed to be the Mahdi. [17]
