Miguel Alvarez-Flores and Diego Hernandez-Rivera, two MS-13 gang members, Satanists, [1] and illegal immigrants from El Salvador, were charged with her murder and the kidnapping of a fourteen-year-old girl. The girl claimed that she had run away from school and that Alvarez and Hernandez had kidnapped her, sexually assaulted her, and forced her to take drugs as she was held in their apartment for over a month.

During their arraignment, Alvarez and Hernandez generated controversy by laughing and waving at ABC cameras.

Background

Cornejo was born and raised in New York City and her family had recently moved to Houston. [2] She had been missing for a month before the events. [3]

Alvarez and Hernandez are both Salvadoran illegal immigrants, Satanists, and members of MS-13. [4]

Events

Cornejo had been reported missing a month before her death. [2] On February 16, her dead body was found on Sharpcrest Street in Southwest Houston. [1] Police said that she had been shot twice at close range. [3] Her body remained unidentified until March 2017. [5] The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children reconstructed the victim and created a poster in efforts to identify her. [6]

A fourteen-year-old girl was also allegedly kidnapped. She told the police that she had run away from school a month earlier and that she was kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and forced to take drugs. She also claims to have been forcibly tattooed by Alvarez. [1]

The victim told the police that when Cornejo criticized a Satanic shrine in the apartment, which Alvarez and Hernandez called "The Beast", Alvarez felt offended and offered the statue a cigarette, but then he said that the statue wanted a soul instead. [1]

After they allegedly killed Cornejo, the victim was able to escape and lead police to Alvarez and Hernandez. Prosecutors say that Hernandez admitted to shooting Cornejo after the pair were arrested. [2]

Alvarez and Hernandez were charged with murder and aggravated kidnapping. [1] During their arraignment, they both waved and smiled at the cameras. [2] On May 26, 2021, both men were sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to her murder. Hernandez was sentenced to an additional 12 years for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to run concurrently with his 40 year sentence. [7]

The Satanic panic is a moral panic about alleged widespread Satanic ritual abuse which originated around the 1980s in the United States, peaking in the early 1990s, before waning as a result of scepticism of academics and law enforcement agencies who ultimately debunked the claims. The phenomenon spread from the United States to other countries, including South Africa, where it is still evident periodically. South Africa was particularly associated with the Satanic panic because of the creation of the Occult Related Crimes Unit in 1992, described as the "world's only 'ritual murder' task force". According to anthropologist Annika Teppo, this was linked with powerful conservative Christian forces within the then-dominant white community in the last years of apartheid. Christian belief is a prerequisite to serve in the unit. The concern with the alleged presence of Satanism and occult practices has continued into the post-apartheid era.

In May 2014, Isidro Medrano Garcia, who had been living under the name Tomas Medrano or Tomas Madrano, was arrested and accused by police of kidnapping a 15-year-old girl in 2004 and repeatedly raping her and continuing to hold her captive until 2014. As time moved on, the woman had a child with Garcia on October 27, 2010, or in 2012, and they continued to live openly together as a family in Bell Gardens, California, until the woman contacted her sister through Facebook and met with her mother in April 2014. She filed a domestic violence complaint with Bell Gardens police on May 19, 2014. As a married couple, Garcia and the woman had an apparently active social life in the community, including hosting large parties and the woman spending time and running errands by herself, having her own car, and working outside the home. However, police said the woman had tried to escape twice and been severely beaten. Through his attorney, Garcia claimed that the woman made up the story of abuse because the couple was breaking up.
