From 1839 until 1844, it was named Nord-Ranen Municipality, from 1844 until 1923, it was called Mo Municipality, and then from 1923 until 1964 it was named Nord-Rana Municipality. The former municipality was located at the innermost part of the Ranfjorden. It encompassed the eastern 90% of what is now Rana Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Ytteren, just north of the town of Mo i Rana.

This road is a much more scenic, albeit longer and more time-consuming, route than the inland European Route E6 highway.

The port has ferries that connect the mainland to the islands of Onøya, Lovund, Sleneset/Moflag, and Træna to the west and to the town of Sandnessjøen to the south. The village is located at the end of the Utskarpen fjord, an arm of the main Ranfjorden. On the western side of Utskarpen is the intersection with Norwegian County Road 17 and Norwegian County Road 12. The neighboring villages are Sjonbotn to the north and Myklebustad to the west.
Sjona is a fjord in Nordland county, Norway. The 26-kilometre (16 mi) fjord begins in Rana Municipality and flows to the west through Nesna Municipality and Lurøy Municipality into the sea. The islands of Handnesøya and Tomma lie at the mouth of the fjord. The deepest part of the fjord reaches 636 metres (2,087 ft) below sea level. Norwegian County Road 17 follows the entire coast of the fjord. Villages along the shore of the fjord include Flostrand, Mæla, and Myklebustad.
Bardal is a village in the municipality of Leirfjord in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located along the south coast of the Ranfjorden, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of the village of Hemnesberget. The village surrounds the Bardalselva river which flows into the fjord. The Bardal Church was built in 1887 on a hill near the mouth of the river. The Bardal area has historically been part of both Nesna Municipality and Hemnes Municipality, but it has been part of Leirfjord Municipality since 1964.

The village is located on a peninsula on the mainland of Norway, along the Nesnakroken strait, just north of the Ranfjorden and south of the Sjona fjord. The Norwegian County Road 17 crosses the Ranfjorden on a ferry which docks in the village before heading north along the coastline. Nesna has regular ferry connections to the nearby islands of Handnesøya, Hugla, and Tomma.
Sagfjorden (Norwegian) or Rivtakvuodna (Lule Sami) is a fjord in Nordland county, Norway. The 38-kilometre (24 mi) long fjord forms part of the boundary between Hamarøy Municipality and Steigen Municipality. There are several large islands in the fjord as well: Finnøya to the north and Lundøya and Engeløya at the mouth of the fjord where it joins the Vestfjorden.
