It has been contrasted with commercial and classical styles. The term originated in the 19th century, but folk music extends beyond that.

The couple have together brought out several albums of authentic Tamil folk music. He has also written books on Tamil Folk songs. He appears on Television Channels like Sun TV, Vijay TV, and Makkal TV performing musical shows. He is a recipient of Kalaimamani award from the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Apart from singing, Anitha has appeared as a judge on several television reality shows. Anitha has written few books on cookery and appeared in cookery shows on TV.
