The school design is distinctive, consisting of a two-storey fibreglass ice block.

The school is named after Nakasuk, the founder of Iqaluit, and is located near Inuksuk High School.

In 2008 the Nakasuk school community produced a music CD "Songs from the Children of Nunavut", published through Leopard Frog Studio in Kingston ON. The album includes contributions by the Nakasuk School Choir, in English, French and Inuktitut. [1]

Nakasuk was an Inuk who was born at a sealing camp near Pangnirtung, Northwest Territories in the early 20th century and grew up around Kimmirut. He assisted a US Navy party wintering on Baffin Island during the 1941–1942 winter to find a suitable location for a US air base.

Inuksuk High School is the high school of Iqaluit, the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. It offers grades 9 through 12 to a student population of about 450. The focus of the school is on teaching Inuit language and culture. The original name of the school was the Gordon Robertson Education Centre, or GREC. In the early 1990s it was renamed for the Inuksuk monuments that dot the region and are a symbol of the territory.

Apex is a small community in Iqaluit located on Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. It is about 5 km (3.1 mi) southeast of Iqaluit on a small peninsula separating Koojesse (Kuujussi) Inlet from Tarr Inlet. Historically Apex was the place where most Inuit lived when Iqaluit was a military site and off-limits to anyone not working at the base. The community is accessed by bridge or causeway, and bordered by a local creek (kuujuusi) and waterfall (kugluktuk).
