Namrata Batra (born c. 2001) is an Indian wushu athlete who competes in the women's sanda 52 kg category. She is the first Indian to win a medal in wushu at the World Games, claiming silver at the 2025 edition in Chengdu, China. [1]
Batra was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. She began training in a traditional Indian akhada and took up wushu after attending a self-defence program encouraged by her father, Sanjay Batra, a Physical Education officer. Her talent was recognised by coach Sonu Jatav, who guided her towards competitive wushu. [2]
Batra began her competitive journey in 2015, winning gold at the Junior National Championships, and secured silver at the Junior Asian Championships in 2017. [3] She transitioned to senior competitions with strong performances, earning a silver medal at the 2024 Asian Championships and a bronze at the Moscow Star International event in 2025. [4]
In 2023, Batra suffered a ligament injury that sidelined her for eight months but returned to competition stronger. Her breakthrough came at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, where she defeated Lebanon's El Rassi in the quarterfinals and the Philippines' Krizan Faith Collado in the semifinals to guarantee India its first medal in the sport. She eventually finished with a silver after losing the final to China's Chen Mengyue. [1] [5] [2]
Batra comes from a conservative family and faced initial opposition to pursuing martial arts. [6]
