Namrata Batra (born circa 2001) is an Indian wushu athlete, competing in the women's sanda 52 kg category. She is the first Indian to win a medal in wushu at the World Games, claiming silver at the 2025 edition in Chengdu, China. [1]
Batra was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. She started training in a traditional Indian akhada and took up wushu after attending a self-defense program. Her coach, Sonu Jatav, led her towards competitive wushu. [2]
Batra began competing in 2015, winning gold at the Junior National Championships while representing the state of Madhya Pradesh. She later received the State Award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh for her contributions to the sport. [3] Namrata won a silver medal in the 2017 Junior Asian Championship and followed it up with a gold in the senior category. [3]
In 2023, Batra suffered a ligament injury during the Asian Games trials and did not compete for eight months. She returned to competitions in 2024, earning a silver medal at the 2024 Asian Championships and a bronze at the Moscow Star International Wushu Championship in 2025. [4] She achieved renown in her field at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, where she defeated Lebanon's El Rassi in the quarterfinals and the Philippines' Krizan Faith Collado in the semifinals. She eventually finished with a silver, which was India's first medal in the sport. Gold went to China's Chen Mengyue. [1] [5] [2]
Batra comes from a conservative family and faced initial opposition to pursuing martial arts from her grandparents. She was encouraged into the sport by her father, Sanjay Batra, a Physical Education officer. [6]
