Nana Kashim Shettima (born 22 July 1975) is the second lady of Nigeria since 2023, as the wife of Vice President Kashim Shettima. She was the first lady of Borno State from 2011 to 2019 when her husband was governor. She is the CEO of SWOT foundation and Model Orphanage Integrated School, Maiduguri. [1]

Background

Nana Usman Alkali was born in 1975 in Kano State to the family of Alhaji Usman Alkali who hails from Borno State and is a Kanuri by tribe. She married Kashim Shettima in 1998 and has three children. She is an alumnus of the University of Maiduguri where she studied English Language and Literature. [2] [3]

Shettima, with the private support of her husband, she carried out numerous humanitarian and social activities in support of orphans and widows. This led to her setting up the Model Orphanage Integrated School in Maiduguri in 2018 to cater for orphans, widows and bereaved in Borno State. [4]

During the insecurity that affected Borno State especially at the time of the Chibok school girls abduction in 2014, against security reports Shettima travelled to Chibok by road to console with the parents of the school girls and offer moral support. That action made her to miss a meeting with the first lady Dame Patience Jonathan in Abuja. [5] [6]

She earned an award from The Sun Newspaper as the most supportive First Lady in 2016. [7] [8]

Through her pet project 2012 Support for Widows, Orphans and Tsangaya Foundation SWOT, as the First Lady of Borno State, Shettima has been reaching out to adherents of all faiths during festivities in Borno State especially the most vulnerable. [9] [10]

Shettima is an advocate for the fight against rape and drug abuse imploring women to prioritize children's upbringing. [11] She was also at the for front canvassing votes for her spouse in the 2023 election. [12] [13]

Abubakar Kyari is a Nigerian politician who is the minister-designate for Agriculture and Food Security. He was the senator representing Borno North Senatorial District from 2015 until his resignation in April 2022. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress, and briefly served as its acting national chairman in 2023.

Internally displaced person camps in Borno State, Nigeria were centers accommodating Nigerians who had been forced to flee their homes but remain within the country's borders. Displaced persons camps in Maiduguri accommodated from 120,000 to 130,000 people, while those in local government areas ranged above 400,000. There were over two million displaced persons in the state. Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) suggested the figure of internally displaced persons in the state to be 1,434,149, the highest in Northern Nigeria.

General elections were held in Nigeria on 25 February 2023 to elect the president and vice president and members of the Senate and House of Representatives. Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is term-limited and could not seek re-election for a third term. This election was seen as the tightest race since the end of military rule in 1999.

The 2015 Borno State gubernatorial election occurred on April 11, 2015. Incumbent Governor APC's Kashim Shettima won election for a second term, defeating PDP's Gambo Lawan and several minor party candidates. Shettima received 94.92% of the vote.

The 2023 Borno State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Borno State, concurrent with elections to the Borno State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has been renominated by his party.

The 2019 Nigerian Senate elections in Bornu State were held on 23 February 2019, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Bornu State. Governor Shettima Kashim representing Bornu Central, Kyari Abubakar Shaib representing Bornu North, and Ndume Mohammed Ali representing Bornu South all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress.

The 2023 Nigerian elections were held in large part on 25 February and 11 March 2023. The president and vice president were elected on 25 February, with incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari ineligible to run, being term-limited. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.

The Borno Central Senatorial District in Borno State, Nigeria covers the local government areas of Bama, Dikwa, Jere, Kaga, Kala/Balge, Konduga, Mafa, Maiduguri, and Ngala. The senator currently representing the district is Kaka Shehu Lawan, he was elected in 2023 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, to succeed Vice President Kashim Shettima.
