Nathalie Pettorelli (born 1976) is a French conservation biologist who is a professor at the Institute of Zoology. Her research looks to inform environmental and wildlife management. She co-founded Soapbox Science in 2011, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2024.
Pettorelli grew up in France and attended Pontonniers International High School.[ citation needed ] She studied biology at the University of Strasbourg, and eventually moved into ecology during her graduate studies in Paris. Her doctoral research at the University of Lyon considered population dynamics. [1] She investigated the quality of roe deer habitats in South West France. [2] After graduating, she moved to the University of Oslo, where she investigated how climate was impacting vegetation and the dynamics of deer populations. She started to use remote sensing, using data collected from aircraft or satellites to study wildlife. She moved to Université Laval to study ungulates, and eventually to the Zoological Society of London to better understand cheetah dynamics.[ citation needed ]
Pettorelli is a conservation biologist at the Institute of Zoology. [3] [4] She has worked in the Serengeti National Park and Chad. She aims to better understand the processes that drive the loss of biological diversity, and to use satellite data to inform policymaking. [5] Her research has described the dynamics of vegetation in game reserves, and whether it was possible to reintroduce Scimitar oryx.
Alongside her research, Pettorelli is involved with science communication and outreach. Together with Seirian Sumner she launched Soapbox Science, which gives women scientists the opportunity to share their research and stories with the public. [6]
Freshwater ecosystems are a subset of Earth's aquatic ecosystems that include the biological communities inhabiting freshwater waterbodies such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, springs, bogs, and wetlands. They can be contrasted with marine ecosystems, which have a much higher salinity. She was Professor of Biodiversity and Ecosystems at University College London, and previously Professor of Conservation Science and Director of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Centre for Population Biology, Imperial College London (2006–2012) and Director of Science at the Zoological Society of London (2000–2006).
Katherine Jane Willis, Baroness Willis of Summertown, is a British biologist, academic and life peer, who studies the relationship between long-term ecosystem dynamics and environmental change. She is Professor of Biodiversity in the Department of Biology and Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Oxford, and an adjunct professor in biology at the University of Bergen. In 2018 she was elected Principal of St Edmund Hall, and took up the position from 1 October. She held the Tasso Leventis Chair of Biodiversity at Oxford and was founding Director, now Associate Director, of the Biodiversity Institute Oxford. Willis was Director of Science at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew from 2013 to 2018. Her nomination by the House of Lords Appointments Commission as a crossbench life peer was announced on 17 May 2022.
Ecosystem Functional Type (EFT) is an ecological concept to characterize ecosystem functioning. Ecosystem Functional Types are defined as groups of ecosystems or patches of the land surface that share similar dynamics of matter and energy exchanges between the biota and the physical environment. The EFT concept is analogous to the Plant Functional Types (PFTs) concept, but defined at a higher level of the biological organization. As plant species can be grouped according to common functional characteristics, ecosystems can be grouped according to their common functional behavior.
