The National Council on Climate Change is the national designated authority responsible for combating climate change and its impact in Nigeria. The Council was inaugurated in 2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari to help formulate policies that will help achieve a green and sustainable economy in Nigeria. The composition of the Council includes The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as Chairman, the Vice President as Vice Chairman while the Director General of the Council as Secretary. [1] [2] In 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Salisu Dahiru as the pioneer Director-General of the Council. [3] [4]

Structure

The structure of the National Council of Climate Change comprised actors from different sectors and Ministries. The membership include:

Other members include the Ministers of Environment; Water Resources; Power; Transportation; Mines and Steel Development; Agriculture and Rural Development; Women Affairs and Social Development; Finance, Budget, and National Planning; as well as the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Appointment of leadership

On the 9th of June 2024, president Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Nkiruka Maduekwe as the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the national council of climate change in Nigeria (NCCC). [6]

Activities of the National Council on Climate Change

As NCCC is related to climate change activities in Nigeria, it has collaborated with other stakeholders and organizations to create a friendly environment for the world we want. On 2nd February 2024, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Climate Action Africa (CAA) for partnership on seeking strategies for climate action in Nigeria. [7] [8] [9] This was signed in their office in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. [10] [11] According to the Director General of NCCC, Dr. Salisu Dahiru "our collaboration with Climate Action Africa is a pivotal step towards building a climate-resilient Nigeria. Through joint efforts, we aim to promptly address vulnerabilities and work towards sustainable solutions for our nation.” [12] This goes to show the commitment to tackling climate change in Nigeria.

National Council on Climate Change has moved to prevent global warming and prevent deforestation in kastina state Nigeria,this is to enhance an Eco friendly environment in the state and across Nigeria. [13]

The Federal Ministry of Environment is a ministry of the Federal Government of Nigeria created in 1999 with a mandate to address environmental issues and to ensure the effective coordination of all environmental matters in the country. The ministry works to ensure the control of environmental issues and the protection and conservation of natural resources. It also formulates policies and supervises activities for curbing desertification and deforestation;the management of flood, erosion and pollution, as well as climate change and clean energy.

Samuel Onuigbo is a Nigerian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives of Nigeria where he represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress(APC).He served as Chairman of the committee of Climate change in the House of Representatives of Nigeria during the 8th Assembly.

Ajuri Obari Ngelale is a Nigerian broadcast journalist and politician currently serving as presidential spokesman to President Tinubu. Climate Action Africa commonly referred to as CMA is a climate resilience organization located at GRA Ikeja, Lagos. It was founded on July 14, 2021, by Oluchi Grace and Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata. It provides a platform for climate consciousness with data resources to support policies on evidence-based climate issues in Africa.

Grace Oluchi Mbah is a climate change activist. She co-founded the Climate Action Africa (CAA) on 14 July 2021, with Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata. It is a non-government and non-profit organisation that focuses on addressing the climate issues in Africa and beyond. The organisation partners with institutions, professional associations, government, civil society organisations, business owners and individuals to enhance strategies for innovative practices on sustainable environment and development of Africa for all.
