Trinidad and Tobago, officially the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is a twin island country that is the southernmost nation of the West Indies in the Caribbean. It is situated 130 kilometres south of Grenada off the northern edge of the South American mainland, 11 kilometres off the coast of northeastern Venezuela. The Democratic Party of Trinidad and Tobago is a political party in Trinidad and Tobago without parliamentary representation. The party is led by Steve Alvarez, with Wayne Rodriguez as its chairman. It was formed in 2001. The party symbol for the DPTT is the hummingbird feeding on a hibiscus flower. The motto of the party is The way forward for Trinidad and Tobago. It is the first party that introduced a vision statement, rather than the traditional manifesto.

National Alliance for Reconstruction

The National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) was the governing party in Trinidad and Tobago between 1986 and 1991.

The latter two entities had previously been part of a grouping called the Democratic National Alliance in June 2006, which had also included the Democratic National Assembly (DNA), the Grassroots Foundation and independent MP Gerald Yetming. When the DNA withdrew from the alliance and the NDP joined it the grouping renamed itself the National Democratic Alliance.

It was introduced on Wednesday, 7 June 2006, after its first meeting at the Crowne Plaza, Port of Spain. DNA arose out of the unification of the Democratic National Assembly, the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), the Democratic Party of Trinidad and Tobago (DPTT) and the Grassroots Foundation, and was under the interim leadership of former United National Congress politician Gerald Yetming, with Steve Alvarez as Deputy Chairman, Hugh Wooding Thomas as Secretary, Afra Raymond, NAR political leader Carson Charles as policy officer and Hilda Goodial as elections officer.

Democratic National Assembly

The Democratic National Assembly (DNA) is a political party in the Trinidad and Tobago. The party is meant to serve as a "third force" is society, providing a "non-tribal" alternative to the ruling United National Congress and the Opposition People's National Movement. The party symbol is a flat topped pyramid.

The Democratic National Alliance was under the interim leadership of former United National Congress politician Gerald Yetming, with Steve Alvarez (leader of the DPTT) as Deputy Chairman, Hugh Wooding Thomas as Secretary, Afra Raymond, (NAR Political Leader) Carson Charles as Policy officer and Hilda Goodial as Elections officer.

In September 2006, Yetming joined the newly formed Congress of the People led by Mr. Dookeran. He advised that other NDA members follow him. In late October the Grassroots Foundation followed Yetming and joined the COP.

On 3 October 2006 the NDA announced that it would continue to exist as a party separate from the Congress of the People. Carson Charles was elected Political Leader and Hilda Goodial was elected Chairman.

On 10 July 2007 it was announced that the Constituent parties of the NDA namely the DPTT, NDP and the NAR would be joining with the United National Congress in a new formation titled the UNC/Alliance. The Tobago branch of the NAR announced that it was not part of this new formation.

United National Congress political party in Trinidad and Tobago

The United National Congress (UNC) is one of the two major political parties in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and one of the main parties in the current opposition. It was founded by Basdeo Panday, a lawyer and former trade unionist. The UNC was formed as the result of a split in the ruling National Alliance for Reconstruction in 1988. After spending six years in opposition, the UNC won control of the government in 1995. In the 2000 general elections, the UNC won an absolute majority in the Parliament. In 2001, a split in the party caused the UNC to lose its parliamentary majority and control of the government. Between 1991 and 1995, and again from 2001 to 2010, the UNC was the Parliamentary Opposition party. In May 2010, the UNC returned to government as the majority party in the People's Partnership. Historically, the UNC has been supported by a majority of Hindu Trinidadian and Tobagonians, Indo-Trinidadian and Tobagonians, and the different minorities of the country. The UNC is also colloquially called the Indian Party or the Hindu Party. The party symbol is the rising sun above the Trinity Hills.

A. N. R. Robinson former President and Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago

The Hon. Arthur Napoleon Raymond Robinson SC, OCC, TC, was the third President of Trinidad and Tobago, serving from 19 March 1997 to 17 March 2003. He was also Trinidad and Tobago's third Prime Minister, serving in that capacity from 18 December 1986 to 17 December 1991. He is internationally recognized for his proposal that eventually led to the founding of the International Criminal Court.

Peoples National Movement Political party in Trinidad and Tobago

The People's National Movement (PNM) is the present-day governing political party in Trinidad and Tobago. Founded in 1955 by Eric Williams, it won the 1956 General Elections and went on to hold power for an unbroken 30 years. After the death of Williams in 1981 George Chambers led the party. The party was defeated in the 1986 General Elections, losing 33–3 to the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR). Under the leadership of Patrick Manning, the party returned to power in 1991 following the 1990 attempted coup by the Jamaat al-Muslimeen, but lost power in 1995 to the United National Congress (UNC). The PNM lost again to the UNC in the 2000 General Elections, but a split in the UNC forced new elections in 2001. These elections resulted in an 18–18 tie between the PNM and the UNC, and President Arthur N. R. Robinson appointed Manning as Prime Minister. Manning was unable to elect a Speaker of the House of Representatives, but won an outright majority in new elections held in 2002 and again in 2007, before losing power in 2010. It returned to power in 2015 under their leader, Keith Rowley winning 23 of the 41 seats in the 2015 General Elections.

Organisation for National Reconstruction

The Organisation for National Reconstruction (ONR) was a political party in Trinidad and Tobago. The party received the second-highest number of votes in the 1981 general elections, but failed to win a seat. Prior to the 1986 elections it merged into the new National Alliance for Reconstruction.

Tobago House of Assembly

The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) is a unicameral autonomous legislative body responsible for the island of Tobago within the twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The THA was established in 1980 to rectify some of the disparities in the relationship between the two islands, though a prior body using the same name existed from 1768–1874. In addition to the normal local government functions the THA handles many of the responsibilities of the central government, but has limited ability to collect taxes and impose local law or zoning regulations. At the helm of the Assembly Legislature is the Presiding Officer with the twelve elected assemblymen, and four appointed councillors. Three of the councillors are appointed on the advice on the Chief Secretary and one on the advice of the Minority Leader. The Chief Secretary is the leader of the majority party in the assembly and is at the helm of the Executive arm of the THA.

Winston Dookeran Trinidad and Tobago politician

Winston Chandarbhan Dookeran is a Trinidadian politician and economist. He previously served as Political Leader of the Congress of the People. His term ended on 3 July 2011 when internal elections were held to select a political leader. At a press conference on 28 May 2011, Dookeran indicated that he would not be seeking re-election to the post. Basdeo Panday is a Trinidadian and Tobagonian lawyer, politician, trade unionist, economist, actor, and civil servant who served as Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago from 1995 to 2001. He was the first Indo-Trinidadian and Tobagonian Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. He was first elected to Parliament in 1976 as the Member for Couva North, Panday served as Leader of the Opposition five times between 1976 and 2010 and was a founding member of the United Labour Front (ULF), the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), and the United National Congress (UNC). He served as leader of the ULF and UNC, and was President General of the All Trinidad Sugar and General Workers' Trade Union.

Congress of the People (Trinidad and Tobago) political party in Trinidad and Tobago

The Congress of the People (COP) is a political party in Trinidad and Tobago. Its current political leader is Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan. Its symbol is the "Circle of Circles".
