National Democratic Party (NDP) was a political party in Kerala, India that existed from 1974 to 1996 and was the political arm of Nair Service Society. [1] NDP was formed with the aim of reservation of jobs for the economically backward sections of the Nairs. Founded by Kidangoor Gopalakrishna Pillai (General Secretary of NSS), K. P. Ramachandran Nair, [2] Kalathil Velayudhan Nair and Aranmula Kesavan Nair in 1974.

In assembly elections

National Democratic Party contested its first assembly elections in 1977 and won five assembly seats. Chathannoor Thankappan Pillai (Chengannur), N Bhaskaran Nair (Mavelikara), M P Narayanan Nair (Thiruvananthapuram East), R Sundareshan Nair (Neyyattinkara), Vattiyoorkavu Ravi (Thiruvananthapuram West) are the winners.

National Democratic Party contested in 1982 as an ally of Indian National Congress led United Democratic Front, in which it won four assembly seats. The elected members include Therambil Ramakrishnan (Thrissur), K.G.R. Kartha (Thrippunithara), K.R. Saraswathi Amma (Chengannur) and K. P. Ramachandran Nair [3] (Alappuzha).

In the Third K. Karunakaran ministry as the nominee of Nair Service Society, K.G.R. Kartha sworn in as minister, but he was forced to step down. After Kartha's resign, in September 1983, R. Sundaresan Nair sworn in as the minister of state for health. After R. Sundaresan Nair's resignation, K. P. Ramachandran Nair took over as the minister for health. [4]

Dissolution

NDP last contested an election in 1991. The party, which contested 3 seats in the udf front, won 2 seats. However, NDP left the UDF front in 1995 to protest against the desecration of the Mannam Samadhi Mandapam during Prime Minister Narasimha Rao's visit to Kerala. NSS dissolved the party in 1996.

K. Bhaskaran Nair, professionally credited by his stage name Adoor Bhasi, was an Indian actor and film director. He was mostly cast as a sidekick to protagonists, particularly Prem Nazir. His comedic roles were widely appreciated in Malayalam films of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Bhasi has also done leading and character roles. He directed three Malayalam films in the late 1970s. Bhasi is also known for his eloquent speeches in fluent English. He has won Kerala State Film Awards, including two Best Actor and one Second Best Actor.

Ningalenne Communistakki is a Malayalam socio-political play by Kerala People's Arts Club (KPAC). This was the second and most popular stage play of KPAC. This drama propelled KPAC into the forefront of Kerala cultural scene and played a historical role in popularising the Communist movement in Kerala during the 1950s eventually leading to the establishment of first democratically elected communist ministry in the world in 1957 in Kerala.

Ee Nadu is a 1982 Indian Malayalam-language political film directed by I. V. Sasi, written by T. Damodaran and produced by N. G. John. The film stars Balan K. Nair with Mammootty, Ratheesh, and T. G. Ravi in supporting roles. The music score was handled by Shyam. The film talks about how politicians and the rich people in society exploit their power and ignore the pleas of the general public. This film was loosely based on a spate of liquor poisonings that occurred in Vypeen in Kerala that claimed 77 lives.

1 August? is a 1988 Indian Malayalam language action thriller film directed by Sibi Malayil, written by S. N. Swamy, starring Mammootty, Sukumaran and Captain Raju. The film was produced and distributed by M. Mani under the banner of Sunitha Productions. 1 August? is loosely based on the 1971 British novel The Day of the Jackal, by Frederick Forsyth which had inspired a film of the same name. The film was a commercial success and is considered one of the best investigative thrillers in Malayalam cinema.

Vamanapuram Bus Route is a 2004 Indian Malayalam-language comedy-drama film directed by Sonu Shishupal and written by Sudheesh John, starring Mohanlal and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy. Shishupal also composed the songs featured in the film, while C. Rajamani provided the background score. The film was released on 23 January 2004.

K. Bhaskaran Nair was a Malayalam language writer from Kerala, India who writes mainly in the genre of scientific literature. He was also noted as a literary critic, essayist, and educationist. In 1971 he was awarded Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Literary Criticism.

Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award is an award given by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, an autonomous organisation for the encouragement, preservation, and documentation of the performing arts of Kerala, set up by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Kerala. Instituted in 1962, the awards are given in the categories of music, dance, theatre, other traditional arts, and for contribution/scholarship in performing arts. The award consists of Rs. 30,000, a citation and a plaque. The recipients of the award are also conferred the title Kalasree.
