National Institute of Design, Andhra Pradesh (NID - AP) is a design school in India located at Sakhamuru, Amaravati. It functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

History

The institute was established on 7 September 2015.

It temporarily ran its four years Bachelor of Design program at Acharya Nagarjuna University on Guntur - Vijayawada highway (NH 16) till December 2023. It was first known as the National Institute of Design, Vijayawada. It later changed to the National Institute of Design, Amaravati, and was finally named the National Institute of Design, Andhra Pradesh.

In early 2024, the institute has shifted to its permanent 50-acre (20 ha) campus in Amaravati.

Courses offered

The institute offers Bachelor of Design(B.Des) courses in Industrial Design, Communication Design, Textile and Apparel Design. [1]

Bachelor of Design (B.Des)

This 4-year course is offered in three specialisations by NID Andhra Pradesh. As the National Institute of Design Act 2019 was passed the institute will give B.Des instead of GDPD. This course has a total of 75 seats. NID Andhra Pradesh is an Institute of National Importance (INI). [2]

Infrastructure

The transit campus for the institute has been set up at the EEE & ECE Block, Acharya Nagarjuna University. The current campus include Studios, Knowledge Management Centre (Library) and IT Lab. Also, the institute provides students with full-time internet access. Now the new campus at Amaravati region, while settling down, is going to set up more expanded facilities along in due course of time. [3]

The National Institute of Design (NID) are a group of autonomous public design institute in India, with the first institute founded in 1961 in Ahmedabad. The other NIDs are located in the cities of Kurukshetra, Amaravati, Jorhat and Bhopal. The NIDs function autonomously under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The NIDs are recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research of the government's Ministry of Science and Technology as a scientific and industrial research organisation.
