The Navotas Uni-Pak Sardines were a Filipino semi-professional basketball team based in Navotas. [1] [2] The team last played in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) and played their home games at Navotas Sports Complex.

Contents

The team joined the league as a founding member for the 2018 season, going by the Navotas Clutch for its first two seasons. The team departed after the 2019–20 season, and as of 2023 is the only founding team that remains inactive.

History

The Navotas Clutch joined the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League as one of ten charter teams during its inaugural season. The team made the playoffs that season, but lost to the Muntinlupa Cagers in the quarterfinals. In the 2018–19 season, the team once again made the playoffs, but once again lost in the first round to the San Juan Knights.

The team changed its name to the Navotas Uni-Pak Sardines for the 2019-20 season, but ended up with a record of 7-22, the second-worst in the Northern Division. As of the 2023 season, Navotas is the only charter team that is currently inactive in the league.

The 2019–20 MPBL season, also known as the MPBL Lakan Season or the Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Season for sponsorship reasons, was the third season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. It was also the last season of the league's semi-professional era, as they would turn professional in December 2021. The regular season began June 12, 2019 and ended on February 12, 2020. The playoffs then began on February 15, 2020, and ended on March 21, 2021 when the Davao Occidental Tigers defeated the defending champion San Juan Knights in four games in the 2021 MPBL Finals.

He is the son of former basketball player and coach Joel Banal.

The 2018 MPBL playoffs, also known as the MPBL Anta–Rajah Cup playoffs, was the postseason tournament of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League's inaugural 2018 season. This was the league's first postseason tournament, and the only tournament under the eight-team format. It began on March 20, 2018, three days after the regular season, and ended on April 10, 2018 where the Batangas City Athletics beat the Muntinlupa Cagers in the 2018 MPBL Finals.

The 2023 MPBL Preseason Invitational was the preseason pocket tournament for the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League's 2023 season and the second edition of the MPBL Invitational. The tournament began February 21, 2023 and ended with the final game on February 27, 2023 when the Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines beat the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards, 88–80. Dexter Maiquez was crowned the tournament's MVP.
